Interview: Zola Jesus embraces operatic past, escapes from L.A.

Nika Roza Danilova, better known as singer-songwriter Zola Jesus, was raised singing opera on a hundred acres of forest in Wisconsin. She studied under an instructor for several years before going to college and switching to more rock- and pop-focused music writing. While she went on to release several EPs and two full-length albums, including 2011’s breakout, Conatus, she began to reject opera, thinking it was holding her back. But when she came off two years on the road supporting Conatus last year, Danilova, who combines elements of classical music with swirling vocals and industrial electronica, found herself unable to [...]

Zola Jesus announces show at Bimbo’s, album art for ‘Taiga’

(Photo: Jeff Elstone) Zola Jesus' infectious lead single "Dangerous Days" has already caught the ears of NPR and Stereogum, and for good reason. The uptempo dance tune is the first forethought we have for Taigai, her next album out October 7 via Mute, and if this is our initial indication, chances are the whole album will get our hearts pumping. She's only 25, yet gives herself with something of a rebrand for the new record. “The music on the record is massive, with big brass and beats, crystal clear vocals," she says. "It’s the most accessible music I’ve ever made, but also the most [...]

We're giving away three pairs of tickets to see Zola Jesus!

https://soundcloud.com/sacredbones/zola-jesus-avalanche-slow Zola Jesus's Versions offers stripped-down takes on her songs, with the singer's powerful voice accompanied by a string quartet and far fewer electronics than one might otherwise expect. It's a bold approach that highlights the songcraft underneath all of the widescreen bombast. Supported by her arranger, instrumental composer JG Thirlwell, Zola Jesus will be coming to the Palace of Fine Arts on Thursday, September 26, and we have THREE pairs of tickets to give away. To enter for a chance to win tickets to see Zola Jesus at the Palace of Fine Arts, email contest@thebaybridged.com with "Zola Jesus" in [...]

Mixtape: If Presidents Liked Indie Rock (Podcast #273)

Mixtape: If Presidents Liked Indie Rock (Podcast #273) Despite their various political differences, if there's one thing that we know all U.S. presidents have shared, it's that they have horrible taste in music. Seriously, most candidates pick cheesy, corny songs for their campaigns, and it's not like anything gets better after they get elected. Even President Obama, who ran on a platform of hope and change, recently released a Spotify playlist with a lot of duds (Ricky Martin? Two songs by Sugarland? James Taylor? A 15-year-old No Doubt deep cut?) crowding out a handful of decent songs. It's not that [...]
