The Sh8peshifter’s “ABRACADABRAKAAFRIKA” encourages empowerment

Zakiya Harris, an Oakland based activist, educator, and musician will soon be putting out new music under her musical persona, The Sha8peshifter. She's announced an upcoming EP, After Darkness, and just released a video for "ABRACADABRAKAAFRIKA." The song draws inspiration from "the death of Sandra Bland, and [is] an ode to little black girls like my 12-year-old daughter," Harris says. "I wanted her and others like her to see Black Women represented as the highest expression of life, which is God." Bells and Yesway single release show with Zakiya Harris at Brick and Mortar, 1/10/13

East Bay quartet Bells will perform a single release show with Yesway and Zakiya Harris at Brick and Mortar on January 10th. Bells has an unique local-meets-exotic sound combining elements of Afro-soul, heavy percussion, and experimental indie pop. East Bay Express said the band "draws from Oakland's tradition of jazz and blues, speeds it up with Afropop beats, and breaks the flow with odd tempos and quick changes."
