Mixtape: Bay Area Artists, Remixing and Remixed (Podcast #304)

Mixtape: Bay Area Artists, Remixing and Remixed (Podcast #304) All too frequently, remixes are just okay, but when they are great, they're really something special. A truly great remix can shed new light on the original artist's work and stand on its own as a unique creation. That's no easy feat, either, given the tension between staying true to an original song's components and a reworker's desire to create something new and personal. These days, it feels far too easy to get remix fatigue. Reworkings seem to pop up almost immediately after original songs are released, and they can come [...]

Video: Young Prisms – "Runner"

San Francisco's shoegazing dream pop outfit Young Prisms gives us something real to dream about with their new music video for "Runner." One of the more buoyant tracks off of the band's 2012 sophomore album, In Between, the song is accompanied by a video that celebrates the self-ruling spirit of being young. In between flashes of a dough-eyed little boy and a worn old man, the bulk of the video is composed of wonderful displays of freedom: driving aimlessly, hopping fences, falling into bed, breaking stuff just to break stuff, racing shopping carts in empty parking lots, inhaling the scent of [...]

Video: Young Prisms – "Midnight's When"

This morning via Nylon Mag, Young Prisms released the second video for a song off of their 2012 release In Between, "Midnight's When." Shot in the Mission, this one takes on the foggy form similar to many of their past videos, only a little more plot-driven -- with lead singer Stefanie Hodapp running through the late night mist of San Francisco alleyways. The first video from In Between was that for "Floating in Blue" released earlier this year. Young Prisms' second big news item for the day is their fall tour with former Northern California shoegaze mate Tamaryn, which includes [...]

Review & Photos: Dum Dum Girls, Young Prisms, SISU @ The Blank Club, S.J., 5/21/12

Though this blogger is too green to remember, he feels safe enough to say San Jose has been starving for a great club scene since the Cactus Club went under (back in 2002, according to that one site you aren't supposed to cite). So when a band on Sub Pop rolls through town — even on a Monday — people find a way to go. And go they did. To see the Dum Dum Girls, at The Blank Club, May 21. Though shows at the Blank don't start until after 9 p.m. the crowd didn't seem to care one lick about [...]

Young Prisms release 'In Between'

Young Prisms' new album, In Between, came out this week, and the band is celebrating on March 31 at Bottom of the Hill (9pm, $10) with Terry Malts, Cold Showers, Cool Angels, and DJing by Weekend. You can stream In Between in full at Noisey, and I'd highly suggest taking it for a spin. The band's definitely rocking a shoegaze feel, but the dreamy textures are paired with some strong pop melodies.

New Young Prisms video: “Floating in Blue”

If Kafka’s Metamorphosis had multiple characters morphing into other neon-colored people - rather than one man turning into a beetle - to the tune of San Francisco shoegaze, the result would be this Young Prisms video for “Floating in Blue.” The dreamy track is off their new record, In Between, which comes out March 27th on Kanine. It follows their debut full-length, Friends for Now, which was released in early 2011. Young Prisms - "Floating In Blue (Violens Remix)" The lo-fi quintet is currently in the middle of a month-long tour that culminates on March 31st in a show with [...]

Noise Pop 2012: Young Prisms, Melted Toys, The Tambo Rays @ Cafe Du Nord 2/22/12

[nggallery id=120222-np-youngprisms] The theme at Cafe Du Nord last night was shoegazey/dreamy pop. Oh, and ironic t-shirts. Though there was a common theme to the bands, it got served up in a few different permutations. The Tambo Rays were by far the most dynamic performers of the night, bringing an energy and charisma that the other bands weren't even going for. They had what I'd call a "blue collar hipster" charm that really worked for them, and they just generally seemed to enjoy being on stage making their music. Maybe because they announced that one of their songs was "about [...]
