Review: At The Chapel, Xiu Xiu challenges and rewards
I think most people do not give Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu enough credit for his sense of humor. During Sunday night’s show at The Chapel, Stewart threw a cover of ZZ Top’s "Sharp Dressed Man" smack into the middle of his set, turning the song’s absurd swagger inwards with typical Xiu Xiu self-reflexivity. Just take a second to look at the Xiu Xiu press photos: Jamie Stewart is a well-dressed man. The best essay I’ve read about Xiu Xiu came out in 2009, and was written by William Bowers, a Pitchfork contributor at the time, who wrote a column [...]
Giveaway: Xiu Xiu at The Chapel
They're weird, they're local, and they're coming to The Chapel: Xiu Xiu is slated for a memorable performance on March 19th in San Francisco. Presented by (((folkYEAH!))), Sunday's performance will be the first time that Xiu Xiu plays live in San Francisco since the release of their latest album, Forget. Their first full album since 2014, Forget is a spectacular collection of sounds, featuring the band's unique and occasionally disconcerting love of multi-layered arrangements, and a spattering of notable collaborators, including John Congleton, Charlemagne Palestine, and Vaginal Davis. It's a full and compelling album, and it comes after a run of interesting [...]
Live This Month: February 2014 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #327)
http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/LTM_February_2014.mp3 Download: Live This Month: February 2014 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #327) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. If it's February, that means that it's Noise Pop season, and Noise Pop 2014 will be taking over Bay Area venues from February 25 to March 2. We'll be doing a ton of Noise Pop coverage on the site over the coming weeks and during the festival, but we've highlighted a few Noise Pop performers in this [...]
Xiu Xiu to release album of Nina Simone covers
San Jose's Xiu Xiu will be releasing an album of Nina Simone covers on December 3 via Graveface. Jamie Stewart had the idea for the reorienting Simone's classics into a haunting, breathy collection in Austin last year, after opening for Swans. The previous night he and Swans' Michael Gira had spent some time discussing Simone's work, and following his opening set (and feeling down about it, as he felt like he did not play well), he decided to challenge himself with what would become Nina. Nina was recorded in only one day, with all cuts from the first or second takes so [...]
Xiu Xiu returns to Bottom of the Hill on 5/31/12
Controversial art-rockers Xiu Xiu — led by their distinctive lyricist and singer Jamie Stewart — will return to Bottom of the Hill on May 31 to support their new album, Always. With Xiu Xiu, intensity is never in short supply and the band embrace a strain of dissonant noise pop that marries harsh stabs of noise and feedback with Stewart's ear for breathy melody (not to mention lyrics that focus on disorders, sexual abuse, and depression). Listening to Xiu Xiu is a challenge worth undertaking. We're forced to acknowledge the pain that brings out Stewart's creativity while enjoying some of [...]
Live This Month: May 2012 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #278)
Live This Month: May 2012 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #278) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. It seems we're in a "when it rains, it pours" sort of place for significant new local albums, and this mix only scratches the surface of the latest in Bay Area records, with songs from Ty Segall & White Fence, Sleepy Sun, Whirr, and Blasted Canyons. On the touring front, Herman Dune and Royal Headache crossed different oceans to [...]
Video: Xiu Xiu – "Beauty Towne"
Xiu Xiu - "Beauty Towne" From Xiu Xiu’s new album, Always, here's "Beauty Towne." The new album was produced by Greg Saunier of Deerhoof (who has produced several Xiu Xiu albums), and it comes out on Polyvinyl on March 6th. The band also has a new digital rarities comp called RARE, available next month from Xiu Xiu's web site. Check out an animated video for "Beauty Towne" after the jump.
Xiu Xiu, Tune-Yards, Noveller @ BotH Saturday
To all the mopers home in San Francisco wishing they were here in Austin, what really makes us envious is missing the opportunity to see Xiu Xiu Saturday, with co-headlining Tune-Yards and Noveller (Brooklyn) at Bottom of the Hill (10pm, $12). Nothing but praise continues to circulate since the release of Xiu Xiu's newest on Kill Rockstars, Dear God, I Hate Myself, and some disturbance has come along with the album (just as many might expect from Jamie Stewart). It almost feels irresponsible to re-post the video above of the album's title track and first single -- it might keep [...]
