#TBT: Phono del Sol 2014 with Nick Waterhouse and Wye Oak

It's hard to believe that only a year ago, Wye Oak took the Mission Stage at Phono del Sol to play their tantalizing dream-pop after a packed day that included high-energy performances by Nick Waterhouse and Thao & The Get Down Stay Down. Relive all those moments in the official recap video below as we continue our special #tbt series — this time for Phono del Sol 2014. Keep an eye out and you might even spot yourself... https://vimeo.com/102345963 The full 2014 lineup included Wye Oak, Nick Waterhouse, Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, Blackbird Blackbird, A Million Billion Dying Sun, The Tambo Rays, [...]

Phono del Sol: Wye Oak streams ‘Shriek’ closer “Logic of Color”

Wye Oak's worldwide tour in support of their excellent new album Shriek resumes tomorrow, winding its way up the West Coast before landing in San Francisco on Saturday, July 12 for Phono del Sol. On the eve of this leg of the tour, the Baltimore duo of Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack released Shriek closer "Logic of Color" as the album's next single. "Logic of Color" is a smooth pop number, with the perfect marriage of warm electronic tones and Wasner's simultaneously delicate and soaring voice. Listen below, and don't miss the opportunity to see Wye Oak at Phono del [...]

In ten days, Potrero del Sol Park will be the epicenter of all that is right with the Bay Area independent music scene with a lineup featuring both locals (Thao & The Get Down Stay Down, Blackbird Blackbird, Yalls, Tony Molina, A Million Billion Dying Suns, The Tambo Rays, and Bill Baird) as well as a dash of out-of-town talent (Baltimore's Wye Oak and San Franciscans-turned-Angelenos Nick Waterhouse and White Fence). We could not be more excited to open [...]

Phono del Sol: Wye Oak nearly broke up on quest for creative freedom

This year’s Phono del Sol Music Festival headliner came close to not performing in the Bay Area this year. In fact, Baltimore duo Wye Oak nearly avoided playing at all. Vocalist-singer-bassist Jenn Wasner and drummer-keyboardist Andy Stack almost didn’t create Shriek, April’s follow-up to 2011’s critically acclaimed Civilian. They narrowly avoided calling it quits as a band. Exhaustion from touring, as well as the grind of doing the same thing night-after-night, broke Wasner and made her question what she was trying to accomplish. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1UUqrGn2B0 “Especially for somebody creative who’s most excited about making new things, it’s really tough to be forced into [...]

Watch Wye Oak cover “Running Up That Hill”

Reports had been circulating that Wye Oak was testing out a live cover of Kate Bush's 1985 classic "Running Up That Hill" on their recent tour, but the finished product, captured by the AV Club, goes well beyond any expectations. Reworking the song into something moodier and leaner than the original, it's a wonderful cover, and it makes me even more excited to see Wye Oak's headlining performance at Phono del Sol 2014. It's the band's only Bay Area appearance on their upcoming tour, and it's sure to be something special. Check out the new cover below and buy your [...]

Review & Photos: Dirty Projectors, Wye Oak @ Fox Theater, 7/27/12

Photos by: Nicole L. Browner For about a minute, as the crowd stood in the dim light, raucously cheering and applauding after the Dirty Projectors walked off stage July 27 at the Fox Theater for the second time, it seemed as though the Brooklyn-based progressive indie-pop sextet might come out once more, Bruce Springsteen-style, for yet another encore. And I found myself — rather uncharacteristically — hoping this was true. I must be old. Or maybe it's just that I've been around the block more than a few times when it comes to concerts. I often catch myself rejoicing when [...]

Noise Pop 2012: Wye Oak, Sea of Bees, Social Studies, The 21st Century @ The Independent 2/24/12

Photos by Nicole L. Browner There aren't enough superlatives in the English language to describe how incredible Wye Oak was on Friday night at the Independent. If you're a fan of the band's gothic country indie rock (or whatever the hell it is) on record, then you must see them live. No matter how much you like the recordings, you will gain new insight into the band's sound once you hear their songs with extreme quiet-to-loud dynamics — like "Holy Holy" or "Plains" from their 2011 album Civilian, or "For Prayer" from 2009's The Knot — played live. It's a [...]
