Woodsist Festival announces full lineup

Woodsist Festival in Big Sur seems like the counterpoint to festival culture and its funhouse associations: it’s not necessarily big, there’s not so much a headliner as there is a curatorial band (Woods), the dozen or so performers orbit a handful of interconnected genres, and there’s no Ferris wheel. Returning for its seventh year, Woodsist Festival is produced by (((folkYEAH!))) and Woods. I'm not sure if festivals are necessarily about anything, but Woodsist seems like it's about Big Sur. Instead of drawing attendees to a transformed enclosing[1], the festival rests modestly within what seems like the main event: the woods. It’s a profound distinction: When it comes to [...]

Woodsist Fest is back! The Big Sur festival is returning with a one day event on May 18, 2015 in a brand new location: the Loma Vista Gardens. Presented by (((folkYEAH!))), the sixth annual event features a stellar lineup of acts, including Real Estate, Woods, White Fence, Little Wings and more. Last year, Real Estate released the stellar album Atlas, widely regarded as one of the best of the year via Domino, so this year's fest should feature some incredible music in a gorgeous setting. Mixtape: What You Need to Know About SF’s Summer Music Festivals

Text by Zack Frederick In 2014, there’s been more controversy about the gentrification of San Francisco than any other city in America. Similarly, anyone who looks beyond the success of well-known Bay Area festivals like Outside Lands will find an emotional debate about the city’s ability to foster a healthy, independent music scene rumbling just below the surface. And yet, mid-to-small sized, do-it-yourself festivals continue to flourish in SF and the larger Bay Area. While mega-festivals enjoy lucrative corporate [...]

Highlights from the 2013 Woodsist Festival, 9/22-9/23/13

Alex Bleeker & the Freaks This past weekend, a couple hundred devoted fans of Woodsist Records snaked up and down Highway 1 and spent two days at the Woodsist Festival in Big Sur. The lineup included the likes of White Fence, Woods, Jessica Pratt, Little Wings, and Real Estate--generally former and current labelmates on Woodsist. The annual festival, which just wrapped up its third outing, is a relaxed environment unheard of at most music festivals. It's like your friends are playing shows in your backyard: there are blankets on the grass, everyone brings their own food and band members [...]

Brooklyn-based Woods has a new album, which is their seventh (!), coming out on September 18, 2012. To whet your appetite for all of the above, Woods has released a new track off the upcoming album. Called "Cali in a Cup," the song opens with a swath of rich harmonica and a [...]

Photos & Recap: 2011 Woodsist Fest in Big Sur, 7/30-7/31/11

Photos by Nicole Browner and Ben Van Houten Last weekend in Big Sur, Woodsist Records and (((folkYEAH!))) teamed up to present the sublimely wonderful 2011 Woodsist Fest. These photos showcase most of the many bands that played at the Fernwood Resort and Henry Miller Library, but they just can't come close to capturing the natural beauty of Big Sur that enveloped the weekend. Musically, the highlights were many. The new Real Estate songs have me really excited about the new record. The Fresh and Onlys and Woods should figure out some way to tour in their "Big Band" configuration. Also, [...]
