Q+A: Beloved monthly concert series Wood Shoppe goes out with a Bam!Bam! in final show

The first Tuesday of every month hold a special place for countless Bay Area music fans. It's the night when team Wood Shoppe puts on their monthly series at Brick & Mortar with a simple premise that's endured show after show: Three great bands, one DJ, no cover. However, next Tuesday's show will be their last. After four and a half years of bringing local and national bands to curious, up-for-anything audiences, Wood Shoppe announced they're set to "wrap up [their] little series." The initial Wood Shoppe idea was born over a night of ramen, where Acacia Newlon pitched her [...]

Wood Shoppe set to celebrate their 4th anniversary

It's become a staple, the monthly event that takes over Brick & Mortar the first Tuesday of every month. It's free, has an eclectic mix of touring and local bands, and is always fun. And this week, Wood Shoppe celebrates their 4-year anniversary. Co-founder, Wilson Zheng (Highroad Touring), said the following of the event: Basically we as a collective (Zachary, Wilson and Abby from High Road Touring, and Acacia from Ticketfly) have put on free concerts at Brick and Mortar on the First Tuesdays of the month for four years now.  We've had bands from many countries...and we're determined to keep this [...]

Wood Shoppe founder talks Astronauts, etc., staging free shows, and their third anniversary party

These days, San Francisco isn't really known for its free events. Ticket prices have swelled, festival costs are up, and you can't buy a pint at a show for less than $5. The music industry in the city is stressed, and a night out will set you back more than it ever has before. Free concerts—let alone ones that feature professionally curated local acts—are almost mythical. And yet, Wood Shoppe, a nonprofit production collective and free monthly music series, has been able to stage a free monthly show for the last three years. Formed by local industry vets from High [...]

Review & Photos: Pure Bathing Culture at Wood Shoppe, 7/2/13

Brick and Mortar’s monthly series Wood Shoppe is always a hit - a free show on the first Tuesday of each month, cheap beer, good company, and of course a consistently stellar lineup of up-and-coming bands. What’s not to love? The most recent Wood Shoppe show was no exception. In fact, with Pure Bathing Culture headlining, it was one of the best nights of the Wood Shoppe series I’ve been to. It’s pretty typical of Wood Shoppe to have a finger on the pulse, but for this show they really hit it out of the park. Cannons & Clouds opened [...]

Video: Cool Ghouls – "Natural Life"; playing Wood Shoppe 5/7/13

The lovely people of Wood Shoppe are at it again. This time around, the monthly music series is bringing Southern California-based outfits PYYRAMIDS and The Hindu Pirates up to San Francisco to join the jangly rock and rollers of Cool Ghouls, four guys who have been making the city proud and earning accolades from the likes of Filter and Impose since the March release of their eponymous debut LP. Most recently, the band caught the attention of UK-based music and culture publication The 405, who premiered the music video for "Natural Life" last week. The video reflects exactly what makes Cool Ghouls so infectious: it is uncontrived and [...]
