Review & Photos: DIIV, Wax Idols, SISU, LENZ at Brick & Mortar Music Hall, 3/2/13 (Noise Pop 2013)

There was a lot to choose from among Saturday's Noise Pop 2013 festivities. So thank the gods of psych-pop that I ended up in front of DIIV's second consecutive sold -out show at Brick & Mortar. I've been hooked on DIIV's Oshin for the past few weeks, so I had high hopes for the heavily-anticipated Noise Pop '13 act - but I was not expecting to be so thoroughly winded by their gorgeous dreamy gloom and varied paradox of a live show. I'm not sure how they're able to mix floaty shoegaze and echoey grunge so eloquently, but I'm sure [...]

Wax Idols – "AD RE: IAN"

Oakland's post-punk group Wax Idols are back with a new single that throbs and pulsates. "AD RE:IAN" is a driving roller coaster from the band's upcoming sophomore album, Discipline & Desire, out March 26 on Slumberland Records. The new single is raw and fuzzy, and coated with lead singer Heather Future's almost-haunted voice. Where Wax Idols's debut album, No Future, leaned more towards punk and garage rock elements, the new single shows a more rooted post-punk approach. Listen to "AD RE:IAN" below and be sure to catch Wax Idols open for DIIV at the Brick & Mortar Music Hall on [...]

The Men touring, playing SF with Wax Idols and Burnt Ones

Buzzworthy New York post-punk quartet The Men are making their way to San Francisco this summer for a June 24th performance at Bottom of the Hill, with support from Bay Area locals Wax Idols and Burt Ones. Currently signed to Sacred Bones Records, The Men released their third full-length, Open Your Heart, to critical acclaim earlier this year. On this release, the band took a step forward from last year's Leave Home, with more emphasis on melodic accessibility in their bold, heavy songwriting. Listen to their new single "A Minor" below, featured on the label compilation Sacred Bones Presents: Todo [...]

Wax Idols 7-inch release show Friday 5/11/12 at the Make-Out Room

Wax Idols celebrate the release of their new 7" on Suicide Squeeze with Wounded Lion from LA and Big No at Make-Out Room on Friday. Chances are, all of you hip little kitties have heard the anthemic new wave A-side, "Shadenfreude", but you'll most likely get to hear the (according to their Facebook page) mysterious B-Side called "The Last Drop" as well. If you miss Wax Idols on Friday, you can catch them in June with The Mallard, and White Lung from Vancouver. (The show was originally booked at 1-2-3-4 Go! Records, but has since been moved. Stay tuned.) If [...]

Wax Idols – “Dead Like You”

Wax Idols - Dead Like You by HOZAC RECORDS In the process of gathering some tunes for an upcoming mixtape, I realized we'd never posted this fuzz-popper from Wax Idols, off the band's debut LP, No Future, out now on Hozac Records. Wax Idols haven't yet had a proper Bay Area release party for the album; that's December 3rd at Vitus in Oakland with Burnt Ones, Manatee and Cruel Summer. Hey, if you're looking for a solid mix to get you through the Friday, check out this sampler of recent Hozac releases below: Fall 2011 by HOZAC RECORDS
