Wednesday: Outta Sight Holiday Spectacular features holiday performances by over a dozen local bands

If you're looking for a local music take on holiday cheer, head to the The Verdi Club on Wednesday night (8pm, Free), where Tartufi's monthly Dark Nights show will become the sixth annual Outta Sight Holiday Spectacular. Billed as "part drunken carol fest, part amazing showcase of local Bay Area talent," over a dozen local bands will be there, playing two holiday songs per band. With a list that includes Tartufi, Birds & Batteries, Moomaw, Walking in Sunlight, and many, many more, the show should help warm even the most Grinch-like (and having some drinks while you're there couldn't hurt).

Photos & Video: Sixth Annual El Rio Big Time Freedom Fest 2011

Monday's Sixth Annual El Rio Big Time Freedom Fest was a really, really good time, and Low Red Land's final performance ever was appropriately heartfelt and nostalgia-inducing. Perhaps a little more surprisingly, considering how long it's been since the trio last played together, they sounded as tight and powerful as ever, and we briefly considered rushing the stage to beg them to reconsider the many new endeavors that necessitate the band's dissolution. Instead, Low Red Land's set served as a fitting end to a day that also included great performances from John Vanderslice, Tartufi, Walking in Sunlight, Finn Riggins, and [...]

The Bay Bridged Presents: The Sixth Annual El Rio Big Time Freedom Fest!

This July 4th, come spend your holiday with us on the El Rio patio for the Sixth Annual El Rio Big Time Freedom Fest (3pm, $8, 21+). Six great bands are on deck to help celebrate the things that make this country great: indie music and afternoon beers. Oh, and freedom. Definitely freedom. By this point, we hopefully don't need to sell you on the many merits of John Vanderslice and Tartufi, two of our favorite local acts/comrades, but the show also features the very last performance ever by SF trio Low Red Land, the understated beauty of Walking in [...]

Walking in Sunlight debut out now, release party Saturday

Three beautiful voices, a banjo, and timeless folk songs -- Walking in Sunlight released their first full length on their Bandcamp site this week, via Ghost Mansion Records (Two Sheds, Dame Satan, Low Red Land). In the beginning, Nathan, Greg and Eva convened to share the pleasure of singing Carter Family songs together, but their three-part harmonies brought them to explore a wider realm of old-time songs and on to composing some originals. The trio's first, ten-song album surveys traditional songs, covers of Will Oldham and Doc Watson, and revisits songs from their previous projects (including Last of the Blacksmiths' [...]

BlueSix weekend: 3 Leafs, Walking in Sunlight, Birds & Batteries + more

It's a tough weekend to avoid the BlueSix: two solid and almost entirely native back-to-back lineups. Administering massive psych jams is 3 Leafs, who has many times been undeniably named a supergroup including members of Horn of Dagoth, Black Fiction, Tussle and Citay. They're joined on Saturday (9pm) by Birds & Batteries, Sean Smith and Spencer Owen (Smith plays guitar for Citay), and Tony Dryer. Sean Smith - "Topinanbour" Then comes Americana-folk Sunday, consisting of Justin Frahm (of This Union Standard), ex-Bay Area resident Matt Bauer and Walking in Sunlight. Walking in Sunlight is the two-man version of [...]
