This mixtape was first published on KQED.org. http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/2016_Punk_Mixtape.mp3 Download: Mixtape: Rocking the Latest in San Francisco Bay Area Punk (Podcast #397) From the Dead Kennedys and Crime to Operation Ivy and Green Day -- to say nothing of countless pioneering and influential bands -- the Bay Area's punk legacy looms large over the genre. Even today, a wide variety of local bands continue to breathe new life into punk's many forms, with groups like Joyride!, Los Huaycos, and Butanna offering up vital new takes on pop-punk, skate-punk, and politically-charged punk rock, respectively. Equally impressive, though, are the sizable number of [...]

A night of nostalgia: Black Flag at Brick and Mortar

Photo by Erin Dage A large half circle encompassed the majority of the floor of Brick and Mortar as Violence Creeps’ Amber Feigel stood in the center of the room, yowling fiercely into her microphone. The audience, less than under-attended, had somehow taken haven as far away from the stage as Feigel crept across the room making use of the space and the apprehensive crowd around her. The unquestionably influential Black Flag would later grace the stage, alongside Brooklyn’s Cinema Cinema. However, it felt very “unpunk” watching Feigel perform to a half empty room as a teenager bought a $15 t-shirts at [...]

Mixtape: 2014 San Francisco Punk, Post-Punk and Hardcore

http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/Punk_Mix_2014.mp3 Download: Mixtape: 2014 San Francisco Punk, Post-Punk and Hardcore (Podcast #334) In 2012, ancient by Internet standards, we showcased a mixtape of local punk, post-punk and hardcore bands that featured terrific groups like Ceremony, Loma Prieta, Terry Malts, Wild Moth, and Synthetic ID. Since then, we've seen a number of promising new bands emerge -- Scraper, Creative Adult, and others we've showcased on the podcast in the interim -- but it felt like high time to do a deeper dive back into Bay Area punk. This mix includes twenty-two Bay Area punk, post-punk and hardcore bands that we haven't [...]

The night will include performances from Trenches, Venkman, Violence Creeps, and The Manueal & the Machine. Trenches, a punk hardcore band from Oakland, is the kind of band that is aggressive and fast. Many of the night's performers follow [...]

Black Flag is back: show at Brick & Mortar with Scraper/Violence Creeps

Black Flag have announced a North American Tour, with their newest frontman, professional skateboarder Mike Vallely. After an on-stage firing of Black Flag’s last vocalist, Ron Reyes, and an array of lawsuits and dueling reunions, it seems as if the pivotal SST Records band has calmed down enough to reunite once again with a show at Brick and Mortar on May 22. An amusing and notable thing about this latest reunion is founding member Greg Ginn taking the liberty to be both headliner and opening act with HOR –– the uncomfortable experimental, electronic side project of Ginn. Joining Black Flag are Brooklyn’s Cinema Cinema, and [...]
