Live This Month: March 2013 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #301)

Live This Month: March 2013 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #301) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. With South by Southwest leading much of independent music to converge in Austin later this month, tons of bands are hitting the road. All of them, it would seem, are playing in the San Francisco Bay Area in March. Even if you aren't going to SXSW this year, you can still catch plenty of buzzed-about acts, like Thurston Moore's [...]

Noise Pop 2012: Veronica Falls, Bleached, Brilliant Colors, Lilac @ Rickshaw Stop 2/24/12

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a person in possession of a band must be in want of great hair. Last Friday night at the Rickshaw Stop, which featured four sets of fuzzy guitars, was no exception. Unfortunately I missed Lilac’s set, but I did catch the band’s frontman, Will Ivy, who recently moved down to Los Angeles after six years in the Bay Area. But don’t weep: Half the band is still in San Francisco, so hopefully that means they’ll keep playing shows up here every once in a while. He also cut his signature hair since I [...]

Date: Friday, February 24th Number of Noise Pop Shows: 10 shows, 38 bands Already Sold-Out: Despite the fact that Two Gallants are playing two nights at Edinburgh Castle, both are sold out, as is Wye Oak, Bob Mould, and Jolie Holland. The return of Bay Area indie-pop band Imperial Teen this year has been met with lots of excitement, as their Cafe du Nord show will also be out of reach, unless there's a Craigslist miracle. Check These Shows Out: It shocks me to say that the Veronica Falls show at the Rickshaw Stop with Bleached, Brilliant Colors and Lilac [...]

True to form, this year's Noise Pop Festival includes an eclectic mix of veterans and emerging artists, and you'd be wise to buy your tickets soon, because many shows are starting to sell out. To get familiar with many of the bands performing at Noise Pop this year, here's the first of two mixtapes showcasing music from performing artists. To find out when [...]

First set of Noise Pop 2012 performers announced: Cursive, Archers of Loaf, Built to Spill and more

2012 marks the twentieth anniversary of the Noise Pop Festival, an achievement that's a testament to the fest's consistently strong offerings every year. In the milestone spirit, the early lineup for the 2012 fest -- which runs from February 21st through the 26th -- feature a number of Noise Pop veterans, including Cursive, Imperial Teen, and Archers of Loaf, the last of whom performed way back at Noise Pop #5. At the same time, there is plenty of newer blood named too; count me particularly excited for Veronica Falls, whose last SF outing was canceled due to visa problems, and [...]
