The Outta Sight Holiday Spectacular returns to Verdi Club

Rock Band Land and Upstairs Downstairs are teaming up with the Verdi Club to put on one helluva Holiday party next Wednesday night over on Mariposa Street. The annual "Outta Sight Holiday Spectacular" will feature acts including Upstairs Downstairs, Rainbow Beast, Future Twin, Luke Sweeney, Justin Frahm with Noelle Cahill (of Magic Trick and formerly of The Sandwitches), and Brian Belknap performing classic holiday songs and originals, with each playing two or three tracks. Of course, it wouldn't be a holiday party without some smooth booze and yummy grub, so expect some of that at the Verdi Club next Wednesday. [...]

Interview: Upstairs Downstairs joining Social Studies for first night of residency

Upstairs Downstairs dropped the band's eponymous second album back on October 1 via David Mitchell's 20 Sided Records, producing what we previously dubbed "a gripping record from start to finish, pulling inspiration from a myriad of influences." It's a beautiful mish-mash of folk and shoegaze, among other genres, and the quintet is celebrating the album's release tonight at Brick & Mortar as part of the first night of Social Studies' November residency at the venue, a show that will be opened by stalwarts of the SF scene Tartufi and which is presented by The Bay Bridged. I had a chance [...]

TBB to present first night of Social Studies’ Brick & Mortar residency

Social Studies takes up residency at Brick & Mortar Music Hall during November, and The Bay Bridged is proud to present the first of the band's four shows on November 4, when the band is joined by local faves Upstairs Downstairs and Tartufi. Social Studies, now nearly a year removed from their outstanding sophomore effort Developer, has set up four remarkable shows for their month-long stay near the corner of Mission and 13th, with the likes of Cannon and Clouds, Foli, Ash Reiter, and The She's filling out the last three bills. The residency should prove to be four nights [...]

Upstairs Downstairs drops self-titled LP, video for "Parkas Indoors"

San Francisco's Upstairs Downstairs released their self-titled sophomore LP on October 1 via City-based label 20 Sided Records. The quintet – consisting of Tory Ford (vocals, guitar), Kyle McGraw (guitars), George Slavik (bass), Isaac Bonnell ("keys and more"), and Dan Caporale (drums) – recorded the new record over the course of a few months at SF's Faultline Studios with McGraw in the role of engineer/producer. McGraw then mixed the album at Jackpot! Studios in Portland. Self-described purveyors of "dreamy, folk-tinged indie rock," Upstairs Downstairs crafted an ethereal and mysterious thirty-five minute follow-up to their debut, 2010's Inland and Out. The [...]

An Intimate Evening with Michael Shaw – "Leave Me Alone"

An Intimate Evening with Michael Shaw is a new band led by – you guessed it – Michael Shaw. A Belfast, Northern Ireland native now residing in Mill Valley, Shaw played guitar all over the Bay Area with his brother Graham's local bands Petrol and Aktion before growing tired of that circuit and taking a break a few years ago. During that time off, he started playing piano and writing what he calls "70s-style ballads." "I noticed there was a natural theme to them," explains Shaw. "They were all written about friends of mine, with flaws." The five-song Lemon EP [...]
