Album Premiere: Unconditional Arms, ‘Formation’

Jeff Wright of Unconditional Arms So I think it's safe to say we're all in a transition period, right? Both as individuals and as a society? Yeahhhh. That's why the timing for the release of Formation, the new album from Unconditional Arms, could not be more apropos. The Oakland post-rock group has been in a constant state of transition since its inception ten years ago. And, IMHO, post-rock is the perfect music for self-isolation anyways — it's almost scientifically engineered for deep introspection and emotional catharsis (I don't want to count the times I've driven around in the [...]

Mixtape: The Adventurous Sounds of San Francisco Bay Area Post-Rock Download: Mixtape: The Adventurous Sounds of Bay Area Post-Rock (Podcast #392) Support for this podcast is provided by Goldstar. Visit their web site at The post first ran on Despite the festival-headlining status of Explosions in the Sky, the resurgent Godspeed! You Black Emperor, and the lengthy careers of bands like Mogwai, it often feels like post-rock doesn't get its due. Perhaps it's the genre's terrible name, although is it any worse than "shoegaze"? Or maybe it's a perception that mostly-instrumental, composition-focused rock music sounds more like a novelty than fertile terrain for bands to explore. As [...]

Unconditional Arms tease upcoming live record

Back in July Unconditional Arms played an intimate show to a group of friends and fans in a beautiful studio hidden away on one of the more unassuming blocks of San Pablo in Oakland. Set at Santo Recordings, the post rock quartet crafted a set of songs taken from every release up to this point complete with an intermission necessary to bring the band gracious refills of oxygen. The show was professionally recorded and will soon be released as both a live album and film which you can pre-order now via The Native Sound. Unconditional Arms take the stage at [...]

Live This Month: October 2015 — an audio guide to upcoming SF concerts Download: Live This Month: October 2015 (Podcast #372) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. We've included a couple of Treasure Island tracks in this mix, but both festivals offer countless potential highlights, including Hardly Strictly's all-star performance of Big Star's Third in its entirety, and the debut of Big Grams (the new project of [...]

A night of post-rock with Unconditional Arms

Oakland instrumental post-rock outfit Unconditional Arms came into the world only two years ago, but has already given us five releases and in just about every format possible. The four piece is now preparing to bring their existing catalog of billowing ambient rock to life with a 'career spanning set' tonight at Oakland's Santo Studio. What originally began as a project dedicated to creating a gift to guitarist Jeff Wright's newborn son has since evolved to a full time project where, when placed in a live setting, becomes a complete sensory overload. The slow burn of their music is only [...]

Unconditional Arms, Mother Room to play book release party at The Honey Hive Gallery

Oakland post-rockers Unconditional Arms and lo-fi noise project Mother Room are both known for creating lush, almost cinematic music. The chance to see them together is not to be missed, even if it is in celebration of still images instead of those newfangled motion pictures. Both bands are playing the release party for new music photography book Sentimental Sounds by Senny Mau, who wrote on Facebook: "It's been a tough year of working on it, but, it's also been great because I got to meet a lot of sick people and have made some new friends along the way. You have [...]

Video Premiere: Unconditional Arms – “The Family Tree”

"The Family Tree" is a track off of Oakland post-rock outfit Unconditional Arms' debut album, Kinship, which was released last year. But the song just got the video treatment, and we're stoked to be premiering it here on The Bay Bridged. "The Family Tree" is everything post-rock is supposed to be: melancholy but triumphant, wistful but heavy, nostalgic but forward thinking. And the video nails it: If there's a star of the video, it's Owen, the little boy you see popping up throughout the clip. He's no child actor, though - he's the son of Jeff Wright, who founded Unconditional [...]
