True Widow will make heavy yet sultry sounds at Brick + Mortar this weekend

Words by Cat Jones Despite largely appealing to fans of metal and other ultra-heavy varieties of music, True Widow is a dark beast of an entirely different variety. Rather than rooting itself in guttural vocals and blast beats, True Widow’s sultry and somehow sinister riffs land somewhere between stoner rock, old-school country, and shoegaze — which was lovingly dubbed “stonegaze” early on in their career. Like the musical embodiment of a dark and beautiful stranger staring at you from the corner of a dimly lit biker bar, their records feel both dangerous and sensual — a very difficult combination of [...]

Review & Photos: Chelsea Wolfe @ Great American Music Hall

Photos by Zack Frederick The Great American Music Hall sold out last night, right around the time Dallas trio True Widow started playing at 9:15pm. Following an opening set from Screature, the sludgy shoegaze band performed songs from its new Circumambulation LP. Nicole Estill's heavy, droning bass lulled listeners into a subdued state, while Dan Philips frequently swapped out his electric guitars between songs. He even had to stop in the middle of the fourth song for another guitar change. "I got the wrong guitar!" Philips informed the sold out crowd. "I knew I would fuck up. I [...]

Live This Month: September 2011 – an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #256)

Live This Month: September 2011 (Podcast #256) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. Two big local-focused events top this month's calendar. First, we're pleased to be co-producing the free, all ages 2011 Rock Make Street Festival, taking place on September 17th at Treat Avenue and 18th Street in the Mission District. Additionally, the Mission Creek Music Festival returns to SF and Oakland for its fifteenth installment this month. Beyond those fests, the September concert calendar seems heavy on out-of-town acts playing [...]

True Widow coming to SF and Oakland in September

Earlier this year, Texas "stonegaze" band True Widow released the terrific, brooding album, As High As The Highest Heavens And From The Center To The Circumference Of The Earth. I'm not normally someone who digs heavy music (and I'm not even well-versed enough in the category to feel confident labeling the band as such), but As High As The Highest Heavens... packs plenty of melody, making the band reminiscent of a fuzzier, stonier Low. If that sounds good to you, check out True Widow at the Rickshaw Stop on September 3rd, and at Oakland's Merchant's Saloon on the 7th. True [...]
