Royal Headache co-headlines Rickshaw Stop Thursday Night

Photo Credit: Jon Hunter With little fanfare, Aussie lo-fi punk quartet Royal Headache released one of the most refreshing albums of the year in 2012 (it came out in 2011 in their native country.) The group’s self-titled debut was a no-nonsense garage rock masterpiece, clocking in at an economic 12 songs and 26 minutes. Royal Headache’s ability to perfect short, explosive bursts of catchy garage-rock and punk tunes made them seem like natural heirs apparent to indie titans Guided By Voices (not to mention that the group’s lead singer, Shogun, has a thundering, whiskey-tenored voice that is a dead [...]

Total Control bring post punk noise to Rickshaw Stop this August

To call Total Control punk is to not tell the whole story. The Australian five-piece came into their own in 2008, after releasing a slew of 7-inches that canvassed genres from more electronic wave to droning garage punk. The band finally released their first full length, Henge Beat, in 2011, and in 2014, they dropped one of the best post punk albums of the year in the nihilist, enveloping Typical System. The band will be hitting the road for a s short tour and will stop at Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco with Flesh World, POW!, and an as of yet [...]

Review & Photos: Total Control Plays with Fuzz and Thee Oh Sees at SF Eagle 6/8/13

After nearly two years of radio silence, the SF Eagle (formerly known as the Eagle Tavern) is now back up and running in all of its dive-y, leather and denim clad, LGBT glory. Like before, the SF Eagle is playing host to some really cool local and visiting rock bands, like Friday night’s show featuring Fuzz, Total Control, and Thee Oh Sees. I arrived at the venue to find a long line wrapped around the building - 9pm and the show was already over capacity. Not sure whether this was a good sign or not, I headed in only to realize [...]

Live This Month: June 2013 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #307)

Live This Month: June 2013 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #307) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. A whole slew of great Bay Area bands are celebrating the release of new albums this month, and we've included songs from a number of them in this episode. As we say in the show, The Mantles have long been one of our favorite local bands, and early cuts from Long Enough To Leave indicate it's another winner from [...]

Live This Month: December 2011 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #262)

Live This Month: December 2011 (Podcast #262) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. For a month when few new records are coming out and music journalists spend a lot of time meticulously crafting numerical lists of their favorite albums of the year, there are still a wealth of great live shows hitting the San Francisco area in December. Bands that had big years in 2011 - including Other Lives, Cass McCombs, and Baths - are making return visits, while locals like [...]

Review: 2 shows & 8 bands in 1 night: Kelley Stoltz, UV Race, Total Control, Young Offenders @ Hemlock Tavern; Trainwreck Riders, Pine Box Boys, The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit, Virgil Shaw @ GAMH 8/27

(Note to the reader: This is an epic tale, long in the telling. If you doubt your mettle, please at least scroll down and check out the respective headliners, who were both rad). Sometimes the music options in this town present such a tasty dilemma. Friday night saw The Ferocious Few at Fort Mason, Cap'n Jazz at Bimbo's, and down in Polk Gulch, two shows too good to pass up. I'm set to cover Kelley Stoltz at the Hemlock, while some of my familiars have committed to hanging with their buddies Trainwreck Riders at the Great American Music Hall. Over [...]
