Tommy Alexander brings new record with three area shows

(photo: Joshua Huver) Tommy Alexander, the college baseball standout turned troubadour, released a brand new album last week. The album, baby you're blue is a collection of songs new and old. Alexander has been road-testing most of them since 2016, including the title track. He'll be playing a ton of local Bay Area dates in support of the record this August. The tour kicks off on Thursday, August 15 at Bottom of the Hill here in SF. On Saturday the 17th, the band will be playing the bar at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael before shooting down the coast. Review + Photos: Tommy Alexander + Taylor Kingman at the Crepe Place

Tommy Alexander (photo: Joshua Huver) "Never miss a Sunday show" is something you might have heard if you often see live performances. That was true of this past Sunday, August 26, 2018 at the Crepe Place in Santa Cruz, where Portland-based songwriters Tommy Alexander and Taylor Kingman were performing. Santa Cruz's own singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Lauren June provided a solo and striking opening set. She performed mostly on her keyboard, but switched to an acoustic guitar for her final few songs. Her music was emotive. Slow and introspective commentaries on lives, people and habits, left behind and simultaneously in the unescapable present. She [...]

The outlaw country sounds of Willy Tea Taylor

Catch the burly outlaw country of Willy Tea Taylor in San Francisco at The Lost Church on Saturday, January 20, 2018. Exactly one week later on January 27, the extensive tour stops at The Catalyst Atrium. Touring all of January and into February, Taylor is hauling his act up and down the west coast from Seattle to San Diego and back, applying the workhorse ethic of playing wherever he can find someone to listen. The commitment is paying off for the rising star, who hails from "The Cowboy Capital of The World" or Oakdale, California. Taylor has garnered high praise [...]

Amnesia hosts new rock and roll project Ty Alex

Last year we introduced you to Tommy Alexander, the Santa Barbara baseball standout turned Portland singer-songwriter. Now he has another project that is taking off at full speed: Ty Alex. Ty Alex will be circling the Bay Area on a constantly-moving 2017 tour that will eventually take Alexander as far east as Vermont. Before the group works its way down the coast, you can catch them this Thursday, March 2, at Amnesia. Alexander has put together a strong four-piece band of brothers to realize a shift in musical direction. No longer satisfied as an acoustic guitar-wielding loner a la John Prine, [...]

Tommy Alexander: Baseball star turned singer-songwriter

Originally from Santa Barbara, Tommy Alexander spent his late teens making a name for himself as a highly-ranked collegiate athlete. But by his early twenties, he was disillusioned and growing restless with the sport. A life-long listener, Alexander had never written or played music until he got a guitar as a gift for his 21st birthday. Though he was a highly-ranked amateur at the time, Alexander quit the sport, dropped out of college, and threw himself (with an all-star support system) into writing and performing music full time. Since then, he’s released three full-length LPs, two EPs, and founded an [...]
