Maggie Gently releases “Alive” ahead of May 29 EP

Photo cred: Amayah Harrison We’re stoked on this week’s release from a San Francisco pop-punk favorite. EP Good Cry arrives this Friday from queer indie artist Maggie Gently, the solo project of Maggie Grabmeier (formerly of The Total Bettys). “The songs on Good Cry were written during the dark winter days in the middle of a painful friend breakup,” shares Grabmeier. “Good Cry became an album of processing doubt, learning to trust yourself, and eventually seeing a glimmer of a future where things are OK. The songs on this album became healing affirmations that you can be a thoughtful, forgiving [...]

Noise Pop 2019: Dude York + Partner bring spritely performances to Cafe du Nord for festival’s final night

On what made for a very fun, very female, very queer final night of Noise Pop, Bay Area locals the Total Bettys joined Blushh, Dude York, and Partner for one last hurrah on the quaint stage of Cafe du Nord Sunday. Opening the night were the Total Bettys, a queer pop-punk outing that have consistently released succinct, lively tunes that never shy away from dealing with tough issues like mental illness. Anchored by the uplifting delivery of songwriter Maggie Grabmeier, the songs never are a drag. Similarly, the fuzzy cotton-candy tunes of Blushh kept the small crowd head nodding. Lead singer Shabnam Ferdowsi's way [...]

Noise Pop: The Total Bettys at Bottom of the Hill

As Noise Pop 2018 kicked off on stages across San Francisco, the city's very own pop punk quartet, the Total Bettys, took to Bottom of the Hill. In this dimly-lit, small music venue that frames their stage with red fairy lights, The Total Bettys helped usher in the 26th edition of Noise Pop. They opened with their single “I’ll Fix It” off their 2017 album Peach. With a lone window the only backdrop to the stage at Bottom of the Hill, frontwoman Maggie Grabmeier’s dulcet voice filled the small venue with biting millennial angst, singing, “I’ve been trying to run [...]

The night before Phono del Sol, you have the opportunity to get in a sweet darling hyperactive mood around people and bands that accept you and will tell you how much your feelings are valid. Oh, and it's free. The Total Bettys are a pop-punk band from San Francisco that embody everything San Francisco is supposed to feel like. They embody the reasons freaks and losers that want to move to San Francisco. They are the ones that still stand, though they have not been standing for long, but they've helped people up so they could all stand together in [...]

The Total Bettys are here to kidnap your feelings and put them in a song

Photo: Carly Elizabeth I first heard of The Total Bettys (SF) was thanks to my friends at The Sugar Bowl. They had made an 8tracks playlist and their track "No Kings" was the first song. It was a song that completely described how I felt the moment I started to catch feelings for someone. Lyrics that knew the irritable, irresponsible and irresistible need I get to be careless and just do everything with that person. It's as though Maggie Grabmeier (vocals, rhythm guitar, and lyricist) had kidnapped my feelings and put them into a song. That's all it took for me to know [...]

Get To Know: The Total Bettys

"I wanna get arrested together," The Total Bettys sing on their new single, "No Kings," "I wanna get tested together / I wanna get lost in Amoeba / I'll never buy anything." Such a stanza perfectly captures the tone of this four-piece pop-punk band's soon-to-be-released debut EP Connect With The Couch: partly facetious, often smile-inducing, but earnest at the core. The emotions may be coated with wit, blistering beats, and grungy guitars, but the sincerity in the words shines through, replacing overused irony with genuine feeling. The EP drops later this week at their show at Oakland's Octopus Literary Salon. [...]
