A bunch of great shows tonight: Times New Viking/Spencey Dude, Michael Yonkers/The Sandwitches, Aesop Rock/Kimya Dawson

On a busy week like this one, it can be (and was) difficult to whittle down our list of preferred shows to just four for Recommended. For instance, in addition to all of that other great stuff this week that we mentioned yesterday, there are no fewer than three great shows tonight, Tuesday, June 14th. As Kevin from Positive Destruction flagged yesterday in the comments, the new Times New Viking album is something special. The band's first record on Merge, it's plenty fuzzy but with some real strong skewed-pop bursting through. King Tuff and Spencey Dude and the Doodles (who [...]

Grace Cooper of The Sandwitches releases new solo tape

Grace Sings Sludge - "The Same Way" Grace Sings Sludge is the solo project of The Sandwitches' Grace Cooper, whose second tape of solo recordings is now available for preorder from Secret Seven Records. If I recall right, the first tape went quickly, and there are only 50 of these, so I wouldn't wait on grabbing a copy if you're so inclined. From the no-longer-available first Grace Sings Sludge tape: Grace Sings Sludge - "My Heart Was Really Breaking"

Benefit for Kelly Malone announced for 6/7: Social Studies, Royal Baths, Art Museums, Carletta Sue Kay, Sandwitches all to perform

Royal Baths - "After Death" The Sandwitches - "Joe Says" If you are at all familiar with DIY arts, crafts, or design, you probably know Kelly Malone, the creator of Indie Mart and Workshop SF. Malone has given a great deal to SF arts and culture, and now, faced with an advanced stage of cancer, she needs our help: This past April, Kelly was diagnosed with an advanced stage of cancer that had spread to non-localized areas as a result of previous battles. Originally dropped from her previous insurance because of the cancer diagnosis, Kelly has had no chance of [...]

The Sandwitches – Mrs. Jones’ Cookies out March 29, release party Sunday

Early 2011 has been quite busy -- there's already been so much news of new releases from local bands, even just this week. Add to the list of exciting new records Mrs. Jones' Cookies, the second LP from spooky female garage trio The Sandwitches, which comes out on Empty Cellar on March 29th. New music has been brewing in The Sandwitches' live set for some time now (we caught them last month at the GAMH benefit show), and we're happy that these spectacular new songs have found quality recordings.
