Review & Video: A B & the Sea, What Laura Says, So Many Wizards @ Cafe Du Nord 7/7 Local favorites A B & the Sea brought their retro pop to Cafe Du Nord last Wednesday as a part of the local showcase The Rumble. Two out-of-towners -- So Many Wizards (LA) and What Laura Says (Phoenix) -- kicked off the free (with RSVP) show, presented by a consortium of Noise Pop, Future Sounds and The Owl Mag. So Many Wizards describe their music as "bedroom pop," but I would add "late-night romantics" to that description; the trio navigates short, atmospheric songs centered on songwriter Nima Kazerouni's forlorn lyrics. They sounded best when Kazerouni dropped his guitar and [...]

Wednesday: The Rumble at Milk

Pepper Rabbit - "Red Wine" This Wednesday's Rumble party at Milk features Silver Lake's Pepper Rabbit, with locals Veil Veil Vanish, Silver Swans, and DJ Bagel Ted. Says Future Sounds: Led by Xander Singh and Luc Laurent, PEPPER RABBIT are drawing comparisons to early Grizzly Bear with a slow building somber psych-pop heavy on the instrumentals. “None Shall Sleep” is all haunting melodies and aching vocals, while “Red Wine” is slow building groggy gem. With an endorsement from fellow Eastsiders made good, Local Natives, a feature in Under the Radar and the release of two separate EP’s last [...]

Tonight: Rumble #18 at Harlot

They're trying to start the weekend early over at 46 Minna Street -- the first Wednesday night of each month is Rumble over at Harlot. Expect drink specials, a blossoming dance floor and an absurdly wide array of live entertainment. Two bands will provide live performance: the extravagant rock pop of Django James (LA) as well as The Frail, an electronic trio marked by heavy beats and serene romanticized vocals (members share a common love for The Faint and Thom Yorke). The Frail - "Count on This" DJing every month is resident spinster DJ Bagel Ted of BAGeL [...]
