Review + Photos: The New Pornographers at the Fillmore

The New Pornographers (photo: Patric Carver) What is the deal with The New Pornographers? Are they, like the proverbial goldfish that grows to fit the size of its tank, going to continue to expand in both musicianship and creativity forever and ever? Not to mention their sheer numbers? Starting off as a six-piece and now up to an eight-piece with Dan Bejar waiting in the wings as a "former (possibly future) member," I imagine that the personnel roster of The Pornographers is eventually going to read like the listing off of some fundamentalist Christian family's offspring, adding a new one [...]

Photos: The New Pornographers at the Fox

The New Pornographers (photo: Patric Carver) Vancouver rock group the New Pornographers celebrated 20 years producing music and the release of their seventh studio album Whiteout Conditions to an enthused crowd at the Fox Theater last Thursday, April 13. While the band was without longtime member Dan Bejar, the rest of the crew was there to sing a variety of songs from their colorful catalog. Our photographer Patric Carver has some great shots below of both The New Pornographers and opener Waxahatchee.

The New Pornographers and Waxahatchee play Fox Theater Thursday

This Thursday, the latest New Pornographers tour, with Waxahatchee as the opener, will be stopping by the Fox. The Pornographers are touring in support of their newest album, Whiteout Conditions, which is heavy on synthesizer and contagiously melodic. Helmed by A.C. Newman, they’ve always been an exuberant and effusive band. Their new album has lost none of the joyousness that’s been a hallmark of their sound since Mass Romantic, the debut album that gave us formidable pop tunes like “Letter From An Occupant” and “The Slow Descent Into Alcoholism”. Whiteout Conditions is a bit of a stylistic evolution that makes [...]

Photos: The New Pornographers and Astronauts, etc. at Stern Grove

The New Pornographers (photo: Patric Carver) Last Sunday brought some delightful indie rock vibes to a sunny day at the Stern Grove Festival.  Supergroup The New Pornographers headlined the event and were joined by Astronauts, etc. where the latter band played a piece written specifically for the festival. The New Pornographers delivered in typical excellent fashion, a varied set from their expanding canon of songs that culminated in a powerful encore with plenty of people standing at the front dancing and cheering to one of their finest songs. Set list below, along with some great photos from Patric Carver. The New [...]

Noise Pop 2015: New Pornographers headline an evening of pop at the Fox Theatre

Photos by Paige Parsons During last night's near-perfectly curated Noise Pop show at the Fox Theatre in Oakland, surrounded by lots of eager New Pornographers fans, I couldn't stop thinking about Fleetwood Mac. This was because at one point, during a particularly desolate and emotional performance of "Words I Don't Remember" by Tom Krell of How To Dress Well, there was a brief moment where I thought to myself that the vocal stylings and androgynous tone of the singer reminded me of Lindsey Buckingham just as much as they did R. Kelly. With that circulating my brain for the rest of the evening, I [...]
