Live This Month: December 2012 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #294)

Live This Month: December 2012 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #294) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. Few new albums and winter conditions mean that there's a seasonal dip in the number of bands hitting the road and coming to town in December. A dip, however, doesn't mean that there aren't noteworthy highlights, including the return of former locals Moon Duo, whose latest LP, Circles, came out earlier this year. As luck would have it, Moon [...]

Review: The Mountain Goats, The Dodos @ Front Porch Music Festival, 9/1/12

Livermore’s Wente Vineyards, venerable for hosting big-name artists like John Fogerty, Sheryl Crow and Dianna Krall, went indie Saturday with a double-bill of The Mountain Goats and The Dodos. The Front Porch Music Festival, named after wine grower Karl Wente’s southern rock and bluegrass band, featured seven bands in all, including folk singer Jerry Hannan and former American Idol contestant Jason “Wolf” Hamlin. The $30-ticket was a fraction of the price to see more popular names such as Foreigner or Journey. It was a picnic-on-the-grass-and-drink-wine kind-of-day until San Francisco’s The Dodos took the stage and the younger fans crowded around. [...]

Just announced: The Mountain Goats to play two solo shows at the Swedish American Hall

John Darnielle just announced a solo tour of the West Coast, with The Mountain Goats making two stops at the Swedish American Hall on June 27 and 28 (8pm, $25, All Ages). I caught the TMG solo show at the Swedish during Noise Pop several years back, and it was one of the best concerts I've ever attended. The venue is exactly the right size for a great intimate performance, meaning that both shows will sell out quickly. The icing on the cake: Dustin Wong (of whom we are big fans) opens both nights. Tickets for both shows are on [...]

Mixtape: Twenty Years of Noise Pop (Podcast #269) In February, the Noise Pop Music Festival turns twenty by gathering over one hundred local and touring bands from across the indie spectrum for a week of exciting concerts all over the City. Two decades of championing independent music is an accomplishment worth celebrating, and this mixtape collects twenty bands that have performed at Noise Pop events in years past. As you'll hear, a whole bunch of big names graced Noise Pop bills before achieving fame, as past festivals hosted early performances by bands like Spoon, Death Cab for Cutie and Mates [...]

The Mountain Goats, Papercuts: Last Night at the Swedish

Words by: Ben Van Houten Photos by: Nicole L. Browner So it seems impossible to avoid describing last night's The Mountain Goats show at the Swedish American Hall without rubbing salt in the wounds of anyone who didn't attend. During and after John Darnielle's captivating solo acoustic set, the feeling was thick in the air that this was a special performance and we were all lucky to witness it. The Mountain Goats - "Dance Music" The show was a benefit for the Family Violence Prevention Fund, and John Darnielle acknowledged his own experience growing up amidst domestic violence [...]
