Ben: I'm normally a "the weirder the better" kind of guy, but I'm really digging Eleanor Friedberger's Personal Record. Friedberger's solo songs might sacrifice some of The Fiery Furnaces' weirdness, but her measured indie pop rewards close listening. "When I Knew" is an early highlight, with the singer-songwriter offering a series of colorfully-detailed vignettes tempered by a playful unwillingness to offer the whole story. When Carletta Sue Kay was first emerging on the Bay Area scene back in 2007, the SF Bay Guardian described the music as "lilting, Emmylou Harris–meets–Magnetic Fields tunes." Turns out the SFBG hit the nail on the head with that description: Carletta Sue, a.k.a. Randy Walker, is a big fan of The Magnetic Fields. Brace yourself for Noise Pop 2010: partial lineup announced; badges now on sale

The preliminary lineup for the annual Noise Pop Festival is official, with big names Atlas Sound, The Magnetic Fields, and Four Tet. The festival will span the week of February 23 to March 1, and will continue the tradition of hosting arts and music industry related events to supplement the seven nights of live music including Industry Noise and film showing. Local acts booked thus far include John Vanderslice, Rogue Wave, Wallpaper, Sun Kil Moon's Mark Kozelek, and The Limousines, the last of whom opened Treasure Island Day 2 this year, and are featured in the second round of footage [...]
