Video: The Heavenly States – “Berlin Wall,” featuring Britt Daniel from Spoon

The mutual respect between the Heavenly States and indie rock heavy-hitters Spoon is not a new development. The Heavenly States opened for the band during Spoon's 3-night residency at the Fillmore back in 2008, when Britt Daniel made sure to inform the Fillmore audiences how much he enjoyed the Heavenly States' Delayer. In fact, I distinctly recall Britt saying during one of the shows that Spoon hand-picked the local band to open because Delayer was "one of the best albums we've heard all year." In our recent interview with the Heavenly States, the band elaborates on the connection with Spoon [...]

Mixtape: Only the East Bay (Podcast #247)

Mixtape: Only the East Bay (Podcast #247) This podcast episode is part mixtape and part mea culpa. Even though our name is The Bay Bridged, we periodically get people calling us out on our SF-centric coverage of Bay Area indie music. In recognition of all of the great music coming from the other side of the Bay, this mix features only East Bay artists--15 of them--spanning a wide variety of styles and sounds. The collection shows that, just like in SF, there's a diverse batch of talent in Oakland and beyond that's well worth checking out. Subscribe to The Bay [...]

Interview: The Heavenly States talk about Record Store Day, their new EP, and the conflict in Libya

Editor's Note: We recently spoke with The Heavenly States' singer/multi-instrumentalist Genevieve Gagon, who offered thoughts on the current conflict in Libya (in 2005, the band was the first to tour Libya after the travel ban was lifted), and showed that the band's political awareness and passion ring true in their music-making philosophies. To celebrate the release of their new Oui Camera Oui EP, out 4/19/11, The Heavenly States play Saturday at the Red Devil Lounge in celebration of Record Store Day, with Kill Moi, Farewell Typewriter, and DJ Bagel Ted (8pm, $15). The Heavenly States - "Model Son" Your upcoming [...]

New EP from The Heavenly States – ‘Oui Camera Oui’

The latest release from The Heavenly States (since 2008's much-loved Delayer) comes to us in the form of the Oui Camera Oui EP, out on April 19th via Hippies Are Dead Records (a fairly new indie label). The Heavenly States - "Model Son" "Model Son" is an admirable expansion of the Heavenly States' traditional sound - where 90s-inspired indie rock and hard riffs are replaced with smoother melodies and folksy edges. For fans of the stomp-clap-stomp-clap pattern, this song is a worthy contribution. The Heavenly States will be making a special live appearance for Record Store Day 2011, performing at [...]

The Heavenly States and Kill Moi @ Bottom of the Hill Friday

Bottom of the Hill will host quite the eclectic evening this Friday, March 26th - and in this case, "eclectic" refers to a mixture of Canadian dance music and local garage-influenced indie rock. Hailing from Montreal, Think About Life are set to headline with some dance crazy jams, with locals the Heavenly States and Kill Moi scheduled to open. The Heavenly States (listen to their Bay Bridged podcast) are still riding the buzz from their 2008 album, Delayer, a multi-layered rock record full of Spoon-approved jams.
