Photos: The Growlers at the Independent

The Growlers (photo: Ria Burman) The Growlers surf-rocked the Independent for four consecutive sold-out shows ending Monday night with a mighty, lengthy set. The crowd moshed and boogied to the Growlers' rock and roll vibes blended with chill beats all night long. Broncho gave energetic, rocking support.

The Growlers continue their upward ascent, play Fox Theater on Saturday night

It wasn’t too long ago that the Growlers were playing the middle bill at Bottom of the Hill. Now, thanks to a dedicated touring schedule and an ongoing appreciation of their laconic, reverb-heavy psych rock, the Long Beach band is ready for the big leagues. On Saturday night, the Growlers will headline at the Fox Theater in Oakland, a considerable capacity step up from the more intimate confines of Bottom of the Hill. The stature upgrade is really a testament to what happens when a band maintains a relentless live presence, particularly among local venues. The Growlers are fixtures at [...]

Interview: The Growlers bring ‘Chinese Fountain’ to Treasure Island

In The Growlers’ song “Going Gets Tough,” off of their fifth and newest album, Chinese Fountain, lead vocalist Brooks Nielson sings: “Placebo for pain / And there's no one for to blame / I refuse to accept that my work is all in vain / Worry's a bully that just won't let me be / Trying to keep me busy / Tussling and struggling.” And lately, The Growlers have continued to seek new and uninhibited experiences, with their work manifesting into a music festival, five albums, and years of constant touring, delivering impeccable performances that have seared the party-beach-goth band into [...]

Noise Pop Review: The Fresh & Onlys, The Growlers, The Pleasure Kills, The Wrong Words 2/27/11

Noise Pop ended on Sunday, and the afternoon show at Bottom of the Hill carried with it a nostalgia for attending all ages matinees there when I was under 21. Why aren't there more matinees these days? Are people not drinking enough at afternoon shows to make them cost-effective? In any event, based on Sunday's test case, I will vouch for the enjoyability of both afternoon beer and afternoon rock and roll. I first saw The Fresh & Onlys at Noise Pop two years ago, and it's been amazing to watch them grow and evolve since then. Last year's Play [...]

Noise Pop 2010: The Mumlers, The Growlers, Sonny and the Sunsets, The Ferocious Few @ Cafe du Nord

Written by Todd Wanerman Noise Pop’s Friday night roster posed some maddeningly appealing choices. Some members of our usual research team opted to check out Atlas Sound etc. at the Great American, arguing that it offered the promising new talent that the festival excels in. I and several of my familiars could not resist The Mumlers, The Growlers, Sonny and the Sunsets and The Ferocious Few at Café du Nord. True, I have seen the three local acts on the bill many times. But the prospect of all three of them together, with a fourth act fresh off of touring [...]
