Noise Pop 2014: The Fresh & Onlys take on Brick and Mortar

Photos by Jon Ching As the storm gripped the city, San Francisco’s Brick and Mortar served as a kind of musical haven to escape the pounding rain outside. For Noise Pop’s second evening of the week, the lineup featured a strong array of indie folk and psych rock; performances would include Luke Sweeney, Sandy’s, Cool Ghouls, and the Fresh & Onlys. The first to take the stage was the Bay Area’s Luke Sweeney, whose 2013 Ether/Or is best known for its inspiration to Sweeney’s musical spirit animal: Elliot Smith. However, despite these past comparisons between Sweeney and Smith, the evening's [...]

Tim Cohen of Magic Trick and The Fresh & Onlys returns to SF

We are very stoked to announce that Tim Cohen, mastermind behind Magic Trick and The Fresh & Onlys, has moved back to San Francisco after having lived in Arizona for the past year. Though he's been away, the fuzzy pop connoisseur has remained a constant presence in our scene with 2013 releases from both of his bands: The Onlys' Soothsayer EP and Magic Trick's River of Souls LP. Cohen will be making his homecoming performance as a reinstated resident of the Bay this Saturday, February 22, with Magic Trick at the Chapel. If you haven't allowed yourself the chance to get into this [...]

Review & Photos: Woods, The Fresh & Onlys @ The Chapel 9/20/2013

Woods has claimed the title as ultimate zoned-out folk band with an edge; their meandering, acoustic epics are interjected by screaming reverb. At the risk of sounding trite, the term ‘folkadelic’ fits their sound quite aptly. They shook a sold-out crowd with an hour-long set at the Chapel on Friday night, and delivered a satisfying balance of well-received singles, lots of songs from their most recent album, and new material. Jessica Pratt opened the show -- is it just me or has she been prefacing every even-slightly psychedelic performance in the Bay Area as of late? Do we need a [...]

Tonight, 5/8/13: Kurt Vile playing sold-out show at The Independent

Indie darling of the moment Kurt Vile will be playing a sold-out show at The Independent this Wednesday, May 8. The Philadelphia native is currently promoting his latest album, Wakin On A Pretty Daze, which has quickly become a critics' favorite since its release early last month. Stylistically, the new album shows Vile’s subtle growth as a songwriter, with changes that are small compared to his previous record, 2010's Smoke Ring For My Halo. Vile's voice is still mumbly and smooth, and still thickly sweet, and his lyrics haven't strayed far from being peppered with pretty metaphors. Check out one [...]

Safe releases 7", remastered EP, and accompanying videos

Berkeley "emotional singer" Safe released a 7-inch vinyl single along with a remastered version of his debut EP last week on Greedhead Music. Safe, aka CF Edley, was once the artistic director for MGMT, so you know he's going to drop some emotional videos for his emotional songs. The video for "Black Satin Living Room" was directed by Brandon Tauszik, who also directed Antwon's outstanding "Living Every Dream" video. A video for "Treason", which is a bonus track on his EP release, follows. Safe will be playing a free show at Treasure Island on Sunday night with Two Gallants and [...]

Review & Photos: The Fresh & Onlys, R. Stevie Moore, Plateaus, and Burnt Ones @ Bottom of the Hill, 2/27/13 (Noise Pop 2013)

Photos by Lauren Espina This week's Noise Pop 2013 festivities continued at Bottom of the Hill on Wednesday night with toe-tapping performances from San Francisco garage rockers Burnt Ones and The Fresh & Onlys, plus San Diego's Plateaus and D.I.Y. legend R. Stevie Moore. Each of the four bands is a quartet, providing for a well-rounded rock show. Burnt Ones warmed up the stage with an impressive rock 'n' roll set. Frontman Mark Tester relied on feedback from his amp to provide the set with gritty distorted guitar sound as he belted out his vocals to the crowd. Amy Crouch [...]

Mixtape: Twelve Highlights from 2012 (Podcast #295)

Mixtape: Twelve Highlights from 2012 (Podcast #295) "Best of" lists are intrinsically a tricky proposition, but compiling them is made all the more difficult by the San Francisco Bay Area's rich pool of local musical talent. This mixtape compiles twelve of our favorite local performers from this year, all of whom had big years in their respective genres. Limiting the list to twelve meant that a lot of talented folks were left off, but this mix offers a nice sampling of some of the best that 2012 had to offer. Subscribe to The Bay Bridged Podcast! About the bands: Ty [...]
