Tim Cohen of The Fresh and Onlys playing Rickshaw Stop on Wednesday

Aside from a few scattered appearances here and there, The Fresh and Onlys — one of San Francisco’s longest-tenured and most-revered bands — have been dormant in recent times. Although chief songwriter Tim Cohen said the group is on good terms now, there is a certain whiff of uncertainty with the Fresh and Onlys (a situation that is not unfamiliar for any band that has been together for more than 10 years). Fortunately for fans of the group, the various members of the Fresh and Onlys have been active during the band’s recent dry spell. Guitarist Wymond Miles just released [...]

Saturday: The Bay Bridged Presents The Fresh and Onlys at the Hemlock Tavern

You said you would stop after a second helping and you swear sneaking into the kitchen to finish off that pie after everyone passed out was not premeditated. Needless to say, you have some calories to burn. This is one of the many reasons we're providing you with a way to dance back into shape Saturday night at the Hemlock Tavern. You've had plenty of warning to prepare for a night of local talent. There's one more chance to catch the Bay's own The Fresh & Onlys and Fronds in 2015. In case you could use more convincing, here are [...]

Campout at Bandit Town, USA over Labor Day weekend

Bandit Town, USA sounds like a fictional wonderland, the wet dream of any biker, rock and roller, tattooed vagabond, or city dweller looking for a quick get away. Thanks to Jen McMillan of Bandit Brand, the mastermind who resurrected Bandit Town from the ashes of an old ghost town, everyone has a new favorite party destination. Located in the geographical center of California, just outside of North Fork and about four hours from both San Francisco and Los Angeles, Bandit Town has all the fixings of a Wild West movie set: a saloon with swinging doors, a giant horse corral, a tiny [...]

Noise Pop 2014: The Fresh & Onlys take on Brick and Mortar

Photos by Jon Ching As the storm gripped the city, San Francisco’s Brick and Mortar served as a kind of musical haven to escape the pounding rain outside. For Noise Pop’s second evening of the week, the lineup featured a strong array of indie folk and psych rock; performances would include Luke Sweeney, Sandy’s, Cool Ghouls, and the Fresh & Onlys. The first to take the stage was the Bay Area’s Luke Sweeney, whose 2013 Ether/Or is best known for its inspiration to Sweeney’s musical spirit animal: Elliot Smith. However, despite these past comparisons between Sweeney and Smith, the evening's [...]

Phono del Sol Preview: The Fresh and Onlys 101

If you've never heard of the Fresh and Onlys it's not too late to get to know them. One of San Francisco's favorite bands for four-going-on-five years, the Fresh and Onlys are busy, you know, gathering fans in and out of city borders and making Pitchfork fall in love with them, upholding the Bays' musical legacy with their stylized psychedelic sound. We've got everything you need to know to get you caught up in time for Phono del Sol tomorrow, 7/21/12 (get your tickets now!). Year formed: 2008 Sounds like: Their facial hair. An insufferable music snob would describe them [...]

Phono del Sol performers The Fresh & Onlys announce new record: 'Long Slow Dance' out 9/4/12

Using the very same reel-to-reel tape recorder first employed to capture the line, "I saw a werewolf drinking a piña colada at Trader Vic's/his hair was perfect," The Fresh & Onlys laid down the tracks for their upcoming release, Long Slow Dance, due out September 4 on Mexican Summer. Yeah. That's definitely Warren Zevon's line, in case you were wondering. And in case you're wondering who Warren Zevon is, well, he was friends with this dude. The album, which begs to be abbreviated "LSD," was recorded at Lucky Cat Studios by SF-based producer/engineer Phil Manley, who has tracked for the likes of Wooden [...]

Photos & Recap: 2011 Woodsist Fest in Big Sur, 7/30-7/31/11

Photos by Nicole Browner and Ben Van Houten Last weekend in Big Sur, Woodsist Records and (((folkYEAH!))) teamed up to present the sublimely wonderful 2011 Woodsist Fest. These photos showcase most of the many bands that played at the Fernwood Resort and Henry Miller Library, but they just can't come close to capturing the natural beauty of Big Sur that enveloped the weekend. Musically, the highlights were many. The new Real Estate songs have me really excited about the new record. The Fresh and Onlys and Woods should figure out some way to tour in their "Big Band" configuration. Also, [...]
