Backseat Beat Episode 10: Hate Factory, part 1

http://vimeo.com/22190170 Backseat Beat is a video series highlighting indie musicians and the city by the Bay. Armed with Flip cameras, we interview bands in the back seat of our ‘83 Volvo as we spirit them away to unexpected, forgotten corners of San Francisco, where they plug in outdoors to play a few tunes. Each band’s performance transforms these urban spots from their anonymous day to day existence into surreal, magical backdrops. A pair of lady roommates strumming ukuleles and harmonizing sweetly on neo-thirties love songs — what could be more innocent than that? As it turns out, pretty much anything. [...]

Noise Pop Review: Battlehooch, Nobunny, The Exray’s and The Downer Party

Blame the weatherman. Even though people kept going to Bottom of the Hill's rear courtyard and disappointingly peering up into the cloudless, snow-free sky hoping for a once-in-a-lifetime show, the real show was going on inside. After The Downer Party's poppy, riot girl-inspired punk rock opened the night, San Francisco's own Exray's took the stage. If it's Friday night and you're facing a quiet evening at home, perhaps playing Farmville while finishing off the cold second half of the burrito you bought for lunch, [...]

Review: My First Earthquake, The Downer Party, The Attachments @ Rickshaw, 6/17

Last Thursday at the Rickshaw Stop they released their new EP, Crush, which has refined what they do best - funny, nerdy dance songs with glimpses of gravity. Starting with old favorites, "Vow to Vowels" and "Cool in the Cool Way," MFE got the upfront audience enthusiastically singing along. The most striking element of their performance was frontwoman Rebecca Bortman's ebullient stage presence and agile voice. With dead-on pitch and unique cadence, Bortman was a pleasure to watch singing live. In [...]
