Review + Photos: California Honeydrops’ swing sweetness at the SF Jazz Center

The California Honeydrops (photo: Ria Burman) Photos and words by Ria Burman The California Honeydrops performed at the SF Jazz Center on Friday June 10, entertaining a mixed crowd of old-time swingers and young-age swayers through the night. It didn't take long for The Honeydrops' sweet, soul-gospel swing tunes to get into the bones of the seated audience, compelling many to hop up and get down on the dance floor. Swing partners twirled, tapped, and moved with the band's feel-good groove, creating a timeless scene indeed. The band delivered saxy solos, organ meltdowns, and vocal dreamboats, among audience chant participation, trombone fun, washboard [...]

The California Honeydrops set to play two nights at The Fillmore

The California Honeydrops have evolved a few stages since primarily busking at BART stations. They now tour across the US and Europe regularly and draw major crowds at jam-centric festivals from High Sierra to Jazz Fest. As their following has grown, the fact that the Honeydrops are a party band remains the same. You will still find them, now performing as a four piece, as much in the crowd during their set as they are on stage. Oakland’s New Orleans style blues and soul group have set a release date for their fifth entry into their catalog within the past [...]

The California Honeydrops @ Chasing the Moon 06.26.10

[media id=36 width=530 height=300] This band is world class fresh! The California Honeydrops are the real deal: transforming any dull scene into a world class dance party. Lech Wierzynski leads a killer band that includes pianist Chris Burns, drummer Ben Malament, bass player Seth Ford-Young, and saxophonist Johnny Bones. Working on this episode was especially tough because none of us could stay seated during the editing/mixing. Chasing the Moon releases new episodes about once a month. To be notified of future episodes you can subscribe to their podcast either through iTunes or with this feed. Produced By: Brian Berberich; Shot [...]

Best of 2009: Vic Wong of Mission Mission on The California Honeydrops

This is part 3 of 3 in a Mission Mission Best of 2009 on The Bay Bridged. My pick of 2009 is the rhythm & blues combo The California Honeydrops out of Oakland. These guys are DIY all the way, cranking out original hits from their "Blues Cave" secret lair (AKA drummer/percussionist Benjamin Malement's living room). Bandleader Lech Wierzynski is a certifiable triple-threat. He plays blues guitar like a Stax session pro, blows horn like Louis Armstrong, and sings with an impeccable soulful wail which is enough to question the authenticity of his Polish façade. But the real unsung hero [...]
