Review & Photos: The Blank Tapes, Mystic Braves and Hindu Pirates get intimate at Awaken Cafe

Photos by Harland Spinks In a small, asymmetrical coffee house, tucked inside a large building on Broadway and 14th, it was one of those night when you make eye contact with everyone present at least a handful of times. It was one of those nights when the bartender assumes everyone who shows up early is in a band because, with a four-band bill, at 9 pm there are more musicians in the venue than fans. Though any of the last three acts could have been headlining bigger venues on a Saturday night, they gathered together at Oakland's Awaken Cafe for [...]

20 Sided Records dropping new comp, celebrating with four shows presented by The Bay Bridged

San Francisco's 20 Sided Records will release its fourth compilation on September 3, and the label is celebrating the new album with four – yes, FOUR – release parties in early September, all proudly presented by The Bay Bridged. The compilation – entitled These Strange Days – will features 21 tracks from bands on 20 Sided's roster, with an eclectic arrangement of artists from both the Bay Area and around the Western U.S. Included are Ash Reiter, The Blank Tapes, Cannons and Clouds, Li Xi, and Couches (a newcomer trio led by the man behind 20 Sided, David Mitchell). Following [...]

Blank Tapes play free San Jose show Friday 5/24/13

The Blank Tapes are all set to rock one of downtown San Jose's newest venues, Café Stritch, on Friday. Billed as a FanimeCon after-party, the show features The Blank Tapes as the headliner, with the more geek-appropriate Slime Girls supporting. No need to go back to the hotel and change in between – press materials stress that costumes are welcome. Oh, and B T dubs, it’s free. The Blank Tapes recently released Vacation on Oakland’s Antenna Farm Records. You can (and should) buy it here. Check out the video for the blissful “Coast to Coast” below. Last night, Allah-Las and The Blank Tapes rocked The Chapel. Read our review below! [View the story "Allah-Las with The Blank Tapes at The Chapel" on Storify] Allah-Las with The Blank Tapes at The Chapel So much rock and roll. Storified by · Fri, May 10 2013 00:36:10 The Blank Tapes are happy to be home @thebaybridged #thechapellaurenespina Matt Adams and his bandmates kept saying how good it feels to be back in California. It's good to have them back! Their warm melodies and overall sun-kissed vibrations, particularly on tunes like "Vacation" and "Beach Party," melted the entire venue. The Blank Tapes [...]

Live This Month: May 2013 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #305)

Live This Month: May 2013 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #305) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. Few recent artists have transitioned from lo-fi to hi-fi better than Kurt Vile, whose latest album, Wakin on a Pretty Daze, is another winner from the Philly-based musician, full of long, languid songs that feel spacious but not aimless. A sense of space also guides Clinic's psych-pop offering Free Reign; in fact, the group just released an alternate collection, [...]

Lovely Bad Things, Blank Tapes, Lake and Cruel Summer at the Hemlock 2/27/13 (Noise Pop 2013)

The Lovely Bad Things are SICK! No, really they have some kind of flu or something. The drummer was particularly sweaty but it didn't seem to slow him down one bit. In fact the band was the loudest, fastest and noisiest of the evening. I can't wait to see these guys when they're healthy! They even played Priscilla's special request for "Paperface" by Weezer. If you are headed to SXSW, catch them at the Volstead 3/16th. SF's Cruel Summer kicked off the evening. The 2 women in the group provide great vocal interplay and the band slides effortlessly from fuzz/noise [...]

The Blank Tapes announce new LP on Antenna Farm Records; playing Noise Pop 2/27/13

After a long hiatus, SF-via-SoCal’s The Blank Tapes, has announced plans for a new record, Vacation, out May 14th on Oakland’s Antenna Farm Records. Though the sun-and-surf vibe is a hallmark of The Tapes’ work, Vacation promises a stronger retro influence than previous projects. It also marks the first Blank Tapes release recorded in a studio. The Blank Tapes will tour heavily in support of Vacation, kicking it all off with a Noise Pop show at the Hemlock tomorrow, 2/27/13. You can preview "Coast to Coast," a tightly-tuned tribute to '60s surf pop and Vacation's first single, below. Lovely Bad [...]

The Blank Tapes release "Mr. Mister" and "1,000 Leather Tassels", playing Amnesia 1/8/13

Matt Adams is throwing his proverbial hat back in the ring, dropping two new tracks from The Blank Tapes just before Christmas. Produced by Raymond Richards at L.A.'s Red Rockets Glare studio, these "secret singles" (as Adams dubbed them in a not-so-secret Facebook post) are entitled "Mr. Mister" and "1,000 Leather Tassels" and dole out two more doses of Adams' potent brand of lo-fi indie rock. The first track features Richards manning the Wurlitzer, bringing a jangily, O.G. '50s rock and roll element to the mix, while the latter is a more psychedelic adventure, with fuzzed out guitars and Adams [...]

The Blank Tapes embark on West Coast tour

Invisible Colors by The Blank Tapes The Blank Tapes, a band whose California-sunny, lo-fi sound is typically achieved by LA/SF frontman Matt Adams’ 8-track, are embarking on a spring tour with This Frontier Needs Heroes and Levi Strom.
