You've probably already seen this video, since it's one of the greatest things on the internet right now - but just in case, here it is again. The Portlandia tour recently made a stop in San Francisco, including Wild Flag/Sleater-Kinney's Carrie Brownstein and Saturday Night Live's Fred Armisen, and the audience was treated with an extra-special cover at the end of the show: Thao & Mirah joined them on stage to play Salt-N-Pepa's "Push It". And those with eagle eyes will also notice Eric Kuhn, of Silian Rail fame, hanging out at the back of the stage playing the sack. [...]

The evening began with Seattle's solo siren, Led to Sea. L. Alex Guy loops her classical tinged violin melodies into rich, full, arrangements. A few weeks ago, Thao & Mirah headed into New, Improved Recording in Oakland, emerging with this stellar New, Improved, LIVE studio session. The session features intimate live takes on three songs from their excellent new self-titled album, and a percussive re-imagining of Pat Benatar's "Love is a Battlefield," all of which are available for free download below. As the session indicates, Thao and Mirah have pulled off quite a feat in their collaborative efforts: taking two acclaimed songwriting perspectives and creating from them a unique collection of emotionally resonant songs.
