We showcase a ton of new and emerging Bay Area bands on these mixtapes every month, but have far fewer opportunities to revisit artists after they move away from the region. In this mixtape, we catch up with eleven acts with Bay Area roots, including Harriet Brown, who grew up in the Bay Area before heading to LA, where he's now poised to have a breakout year. Others, including Cotillon, spent fewer, but no less impactful years in the local music scene; for [...]

Best of 2015: Joel of Talkies, Cocktails, and DSTVV on shows at the White Horse

The World at White Horse I always hated the uncritical punk mantra that commands "support the scene". As if "the scene" was some monolithic, benevolent sanctuary where a progressive community of cast-off weirdos, and, oh yeah, enlightened alt-music, was nourished — as opposed to being another hierarchical, careerist social club that, yes, occasionally produced enlightened alt-music and allowed otherwise hopeless misfits to thrive. That said, going to Saturday shows in the ramshackle back room of Oakland's WhiteHorse makes the dubious task of supporting your local scene a lot more palatable. The drinks are cheap. The regulars are friendly. Shows start [...]

Video Premiere: Talkies – “Hollow”

Last year, Oakland's Talkies caught our ear with their hook-laced pop-rock sound. Since we first talked to them, Talkies have toured up and down the coast and released their debut cassette on Death Records. Today, they're releasing a video for "Hollow", a track from the aforementioned Death Records cassette. It features clips of the 1932 Fleischer Studios cartoon "Dancing on the Moon" synced up to the track 80's aerobics style. OMG! It fits perfectly! But seriously, the cartoon's a nice complement - check it out: https://youtu.be/8igMIWHVPsM Talkies have a host of shows coming up, starting tomorrow night at Rickshaw with [...]

Get to Know: Talkies

Photo: Jeff Harland Talkies are a brand-spankin' new four-piece that will take you back to the glamorous days of slick guitar-driven power pop. Frontman Ray Seraphin (whom you may know from Glitz, Legs, and other local bands) describes Talkies as a band "combining the dark, haunting tones of EMPIRE and pop accessibility of the SHOES." Talkies has a five-song EP recorded, and you can listen to "Never Fear" off the EP below - it's got all sorts of nifty little guitar licks, and a memorable and shredtastic solo, all in just two minutes: Talkies perform this Saturday, August 23 at [...]
