Surfer Blood, playing first shows without Thomas Fekete, coming to The Chapel next week

Surfer Blood. Thomas Fekete at left. Obviously, Donald Trump’s horrifying ascendancy to the presidency will be the singular, terrifying takeaway for 2016, but the year will also be remembered for the sheer loss of artistic visionaries. David Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen — the list of legendary musicians who passed away in 2016 is impossible to fathom. Each day brought a new bit of unwelcome news until the year mercifully came to a close. Yet, of all the deaths that from last year, none affected me in a more personal way than the passing of Thomas Fekete, the young guitarist for [...]

Review & Photos: Surfer Blood @ The Independent

Photos and review by Ryan McDonald On one of the coldest nights of the year, Surfer Blood did their best to transport the crowd at The Independent to a sun-drenched beach with their guitar heavy pop-rock. Opening with the breezy instrumental track “Neighborhood Riffs” off their critically acclaimed debut album Astro Coast, Surfer Blood grabbed the audience and made it clear their set was going to be chock-full of calculated melodies and planned reverb. After working through material from their 2013 release Pythons, lead singer John Paul Pitts decided it was time to serenade the crowd from down below with [...]

Giveaway: Surfer Blood @ The Independent this Tuesday

That band that loves to swim in reverb, also known as West Palm Beach, FL indie rockers Surfer Blood, are playing the Independent this Tuesday in support of their sophomore LP, Pythons. Released by Sire Records and recorded by Gil Norton (he's produced albums by The Pixies, Foo Fighters, and uh, Sum 41) in California, Pitchfork called the album "hooky, Weezer-ish guitar pop," which seems like a pretty reasonable description. To enter for a chance to win tickets to see Surfer Blood at The Independent on Tuesday, email contest@thebaybridged.com with “Surfer Blood” in the subject line and your full name and email [...]

First set of Noise Pop 2012 performers announced: Cursive, Archers of Loaf, Built to Spill and more

2012 marks the twentieth anniversary of the Noise Pop Festival, an achievement that's a testament to the fest's consistently strong offerings every year. In the milestone spirit, the early lineup for the 2012 fest -- which runs from February 21st through the 26th -- feature a number of Noise Pop veterans, including Cursive, Imperial Teen, and Archers of Loaf, the last of whom performed way back at Noise Pop #5. At the same time, there is plenty of newer blood named too; count me particularly excited for Veronica Falls, whose last SF outing was canceled due to visa problems, and [...]
