Professional Fans return to Cafe Du Nord tonight with another exciting indie rock line up featuring PAWS, Surf Club, and Tiaras. Making their San Francisco debut, Glasgow-based trio PAWS (Phillip Taylor, Josh Swinney, Matthew Scott) will headline the Monday night show. Their lyrically-charged pop/rock album Cokefloat! was released last year on FatCat Records. Stream two tracks from that release below, and be sure not to miss tonight's rare West Coast performance from this fast-rising UK band. Surf Club's "Reverie" featured in IBA World Tour highlight video

Photo: Claude Cardenas Stockton's Surf Club has been a favorite around here recently, so much so that they garnered a spot in our Phono del Sol 2013 lineup. A couple weeks ago, the band's track "Reverie" (which we premiered last October) was featured in a highlight video for the IBA World Tour (that's International Bodyboarding Association, naturally) event in Antofagasta, Chile. As we told you before, the band exhibits some strong shoegaze influences on "Reverie", with lead guitarist Marcos Gonzalez's frenetically swirling riffs alongside frontman Frankie Soto's intoxicatingly droning vocals, and the combo provides the perfect backdrop for the video. Review & Photos: Beach Fossils, Surf Club, Black Jeans @ Slim's 4/23/2013

If you're in the mood for some serious '90s nostalgia, no time machine necessary. Brooklyn's Beach Fossils at Slim's on Tuesday night certainly fulfilled such a craving, and the audience was totally into it. It's been a while since I've seen a crowd go so absolutely ballistic. From my position at the edge of a lively flail-pit, I was one with the sweaty mob of enthused Beach Fossils fans dancing up a storm. It was a little unexpected, honestly - sunny dream pop doesn't exactly equate to a dance-mosh frenzy, but everyone (myself included) certainly welcomed Beach Fossils' infectious energy [...]

Surf Club releases new split single with Manatee, plays Slim's on 4/23/13

The city of Stockton has made the number one spot on Forbes’ “America’s Most Miserable Cities” list for years, but there’s certainly no shortage of great bands coming out of this tiny East Bay town. From Craft Spells to Whirr, now Surf Club has joined the ranks of noteworthy Stockton-grown bands. On April 23rd, Surf Club will share the stage at Slim’s with Beach Fossils. Could there ever be a more like-minded lineup than two dreamy bands that both boast ocean-related names? Surf Club’s newest single “Swoon” is a shoegaze-inclined pop song appearing on the A-side of Death Party Records' [...]

Horrorscopes – "Conundrum"

Most bands say they are influenced by a variety of genres, but with San Francisco's Horrorscopes, you can actually hear that variety of influences in their music. "Most of our songs come from the whole band jamming until we hit a certain groove or catch a certain hook that blows our balls in the straightest way possible," says guitarist Greg Promani. "If everyone's not feeling it, we don't do it." However they developed their sound or whatever you choose to call it, the formula works and can best be understood by simply listening. Check out Horrorscopes' video for "Conundrum" below, [...]

Song Premiere: Surf Club – "Reverie"

Surf Club – native sons of Stockton and proprietors of an unmistakable guitar-driven pop sound – are back with a new single entitled "Reverie", the follow-up to their 2012 debut EP Young Love. Mixed by Patrick Brown and mastered by Jorge Hernandez at Different Fur Studios in San Francisco, "Reverie" (which made its live premiere at the band's September show opening for Mac DeMarco at Rickshaw Stop) features the band wearing its shoegaze influences on its sleeve, with newly-minted lead guitarist Marcos Gonzalez's maze of raucous and swirling riffs providing the perfect backdrop for frontman Frankie Soto's intoxicatingly droning vocals. Review: Mac DeMarco and Surf Club @ Rickshaw Stop, 9/14/12

The few who attended last Friday's show at Rickshaw Stop were treated to a wild night of danceable indie rock and hilarious stage banter from Mac DeMarco and Surf Club, despite an unfortunate cancellation from Melted Toys due to trouble with the band's tour van. With empty set times to fill, Justin Vallesteros of Craft Spells played a long DJ set of all the latest grooves. Surf Club took the stage at 10:30pm, performing for the first time since new guitarist Marcos Gonzalez joined the band this year. The Stockton-based shoegaze outfit—formed by vocalist and guitar player Frankie Soto (a [...]
