Giveaway: Two nights of Speedy Ortiz

(illustration: Xaime Hernandez) Speedy Ortiz has been up there on my "favorite bands that are alive while I'm alive" list for years now, and with the release of their newest album Twerp Verse, I am happy to say that I am still very happy that I'm alive while they're alive. I am also very happy that I'm alive while you're alive, because Speedy Ortiz are playing two shows in the Bay Area this weekend. And due to the fact that you are alive (even if you're not happy about it), you can go see Speedy Ortiz live in concert in [...]

Review + Photos: Speedy Ortiz at the Rickshaw Stop

Speedy Ortiz and the Good Life (all photos by Jennymay Villarete) I wasn't having a good day. I lost my dog of 14 years in the morning, but still I ventured out to Rickshaw Stop on June 2 with puffy eyes and a weakened state of mind, because I would not let this stop me from going to something that I had been excited about for months. I stood alone by the side of the stage, barely talking to anyone and avoiding interactions with people I knew. When Tancred came on, I was starting to remember why I was so excited [...]

Q&A: Sadie from Speedy Ortiz is living the female emo kid’s dream

I have been a fan of Speedy Ortiz since the first time I heard "No Below," got it stuck in my head, and listened to the album for a week. What really made me love the band was reading Sadie Dupuis's perspective. Not only on how the band came about but about being female, demisexual, and queer in the music scene. Her perspective was so important to me, because I had never read or met anyone with a experiences so similar to my own. Sadie was obsessed with same bands as I was when I was young too, following everything [...]

Speedy Ortiz will play Rickshaw Stop August 7

Outside Lands is fast approaching, and with the festival comes many great musicians, some of which wander to other more affordable venues. Speedy Ortiz is one of these musicians. Not only have they been getting a lot of press due to their sound and originality, but they’re also playing Outside Lands and Rickshaw Stop on the same day. Lead singer Sadie Dupuis, who originally started the band as a solo project, has since opened the door to the 3 more musicians. Dupuis is already becoming a feminist icon with her undeniable effort to make the indie-rock-scene a female friendly space. [...]

Interview: Ex Hex’s Mary Timony talks ‘Rips’, growing up, and ’80s power pop

Ex Hex (Photo by Jonah Takagi) “Before Ex Hex started, I had never really thought about making a song that was under two minutes long,” Mary Timony remembers. Considering her sprawling history collaborating with musicians all over varying rock subgenres, that’s saying a lot. Since breaking out in bands like Helium, Autoclave, and Wild Flag (along with Sleater-Kinney alum Carrie Brownstein), the gutsy rock luminary has turned her focus to a grunge-lined power pop. That music necessitates a certain brevity. “For the songs that I wrote, I was thinking about the music that I loved when I was 12 years [...]

First City Festival announces 2014 lineup featuring Beck and The National

As we told you a little while ago, the second iteration of the First City Festival will take place August 23 and 24 at the Monterey County Fair and Event Center. Now the folks behind NorCal's newest summer music fest have announced this year's lineup, and it's nothing short of spectacular, featuring indie legends Beck and The National as headliners, along with the likes of Best Coast, Dawes, Tokyo Police Club, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and Speedy Ortiz, as well as local faves Geographer, Sleepy Sun, The Family Crest, Doe Eye, Cool Ghouls, and Survival Guide. In addition to performers on [...]

Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks coming to Slim’s with Speedy Ortiz

Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks released Wig Out at Jagbags shortly after the New Year, and the record (their sixth studio album and first since 2011's Mirror Traffic) has been warmly received by most publications, including some much larger media outlets. And the praise is undoubtedly deserved, as the former Pavement frontman and three partners in crime (bassist Joanna Bolme, keyboardist and guitarist Mike Clark, and newly initiated drummer Jake Morris) added yet another engrossing chapter to their discography, fusing old-school indie rock with prog and psychedelia like few others can. Now, for the first time since the release of [...]

Father/Daughter drops Sadie Dupuis track off RSD covers album

Sadie Dupuis, the spunky leader of Speedy Ortiz, went solo to cover Josie & the Pussycats' "Pretend to be Nice" for local label Father/Daughter's Record Store Day release, Faux Real. The stripped-down, smokier version captures the song's bitter flavor, and the impudent Dupuis is the perfect vessel for the track's message. More tracks from the record include songs adapted from The Muppets, Freaky Friday, The Goofy Movie and more. These will come out April 19 for the official Record Store Day, but move fast—only 500 copies were pressed. Fans of Speedy Ortiz will be able to catch them soon as well. They're playing [...]
