http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/Bay_Area_Roots_Mixtape.mp3 Download: Mixtape: Stellar Musicians with Bay Area Roots (Podcast #403) This episode first appeared on KQED.org. We showcase a ton of new and emerging Bay Area bands on these mixtapes every month, but have far fewer opportunities to revisit artists after they move away from the region. In this mixtape, we catch up with eleven acts with Bay Area roots, including Harriet Brown, who grew up in the Bay Area before heading to LA, where he's now poised to have a breakout year. Others, including Cotillon, spent fewer, but no less impactful years in the local music scene; for [...]

Some Ember releases self-titled debut LP

(Photo by Suzy Poling) Oakland duo Dylan Travis and Nina Chase are no strangers to dark synth pop - the pair began releasing music as Some Ember in late 2011. Up until recently their tracks were only available on cassette, but on June 10 that changed when the band dropped their self-titled debut record via San Diego label Dream Recordings. The Some Ember LP is clear and cold as ice, anchored in industrial beats and raw percussion wrapped within the sheerness of Travis and Chase’s melodic vocals. The ten track album is part post-apocalyptic palace, part ethereal pop. Stream the [...]

Best of 2013: Draut on the Most Overlooked Bay Area Releases

While you've undoubtedly heard (or at the very least, heard of) this year's long list of lauded LP releases from local headliners such as Deafheaven, Mikal Cronin, Thee Oh Sees, Shannon and the Clams, Ty Segall/Fuzz, and the like, there are dozens more digital, vinyl, and cassette releases that may have slipped under your radar. You probably also caught wind of our extensive local coverage of 2013 debuts and breakthroughs from acts like Dan Casey, Glenn Jackson, Wild Moth, Cool Ghouls, Antwon, and Tony Molina, but there are even more treasures to be found by digging deeper into the musical [...]

Review & Photos: Majical Cloudz, Moon King, Some Ember @ Rickshaw Stop, 8/24/13

For most concertgoers I know, this weekend presented a lot of hard decisions -- there was My Bloody Valentine on Friday, FYF in Los Angeles all weekend, the 20th Street Block Party on Saturday afternoon, and of course, the First City Festival in Monterey on Saturday and Sunday. I decided with splitting the difference; having gone to FYF last year, in addition to wanting to save my ear drums for other excursions, I went with staying in town on Saturday for the block party then heading to Monterey on Sunday, which conveniently meant that I could also catch Majical Cloudz [...]

Xander Harris, Some Ember, Muscle Drum performing at The Night Light, 6/13/13

The Night Light in Oakland has some cool events coming up this week. First and foremost, Moon Glyph is welcoming Austin's Xander Harris for a headlining gig on Thursday, June 13. East Bay alumni Some Ember will support the show with San Francisco's Muscle Drum for a night of dark synth music. Self-described "grave wave EBM" producer Xander Harris (a.k.a. Justin Sweatt) hails from Austin, where he has been producing dark electronic music since 2009. His style draws heavy inspiration from Giallo horror films (think Dario Argento's Suspiria), as well as early industrial music and dance-floor techno. His 2010 debut [...]

The show marks the first Bay Area headlining performance for Mister Lies, the electronic solo project of Chicago's Nick Zanca, and only his second San Francisco show ever. On the flipside, the occasion also marks the last San Francisco show of Some Ember (for a while, at least), as the Dylan Travis-fronted synth-goth outfit is currently in the process of moving across the country from the East Bay to [...]
