Pete Frauenfelder on trading the Bay for New Mexico

The Bay Area music veteran explains why he broke up with SF and its surroundings for the Southwest. My new home of Mesilla, New Mexico is 47 miles west of El Paso, and about a three and a half hour drive south of Albuquerque, right outside of Las Cruces, in the shadow of the Organ Mountains. For a time, both Mexico and the US claimed it as their own, causing it to become known as a "no man's land." Though originally not a part of the US after the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed, the border eventually crossed it. [...]

Mixtape: San Francisco Twang — Sampling Local Americana, Country, and Bluegrass Bands

The Brothers Comatose (photo: Zack Sumner) Download: Mixtape: San Francisco Twang -- Sampling Americana, Country and Bluegrass Bands (Podcast #384) The San Francisco Bay Area's love for Americana, country and bluegrass music manifests most visibly during the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival, which draws 750,000+ people to Golden Gate Park annually, but there are great twangy sounds coming out of the Bay all year round. Venues like The Plough & Stars, The Lucky Horseshoe, Amnesia, and Armando's in Martinez, as well as Twang Sundays at Thee Parkside, are a fertile incubator for local roots acts. Plenty of them, like The [...]

Slow Motion Cowboys release ‘In Exile/On the Mesa’ at Rickshaw Stop

On Thursday, April 21, Slow Motion Cowboys will celebrate the release of their newest album In Exile/On the Mesa, as well as the birthday of Pete Fields - the Cowboys’ lead singer/songwriter/mastermind — at Rickshaw Stop. Slow Motion Cowboys have been an integral part of San Francisco’s small-but-vital country scene for years and — with The B-Stars’ western swing and the Patsy Cline-infused indie folk of Indianna Hale complementing Slow Motion Cowboys’ California country — Thursday night promises to be a celebration of the many sides of SF country. The first single from In Exile/On the Mesa, “Bisbee”, sounds like [...]

Video: Slow Motion Cowboys – “Eight Ball”

Slow Motion Cowboys recently shared a video of their new track "Eight Ball", which was shot and recorded live at Shipwreck Studios in Oakland. SMC frontman Pete Frauenfelder employs a non-conventional cadence on the track that gives it a more conversational feel and keeps you on your toes, setting it apart from your typical country or folk songs. Slow Motion Cowboys recently wrapped up another tour of the Southwest, playing "honkytonks and biker bars, punk houses and legit venues," according to Frauenfelder. Pete tells me they're planning on hitting the studio again this summer to release something before their [...]

Slow Motion Cowboys – 'Buzzard Songs' LP

If you follow Bay Area music closely, Slow Motion Cowboys should sound familiar to you – the band is a another project from Trainwreck Riders guitarist and vocalist Pete Frauenfelder. While Trainwreck Riders songs fit into what Fraunenfelder accurately describes as their "own genre that we've created over the last 11 years," Slow Motion Cowboys represent new territory for Pete. The acoustic Buzzard Songs LP is full of wonderful dobro playing, which helped create a mood perfect for lonesome daydreaming. Slow Motion Cowboys just wrapped up a tour of the Southwest, visiting towns normally off the radar of almost all [...]
