Review: Jessy Lanza sells out Amnesia

On Saturday night, Jessy Lanza sold out Amnesia as the headliner of the Pro Fans 015 Showcase. For $10 on WillCall, showgoers caught San Francisco staple Running in the Fog, Oakland's Shock, and Lanza. Shock, made up of Dan Judd of Sorcerer/Windsurf, Terri Loewenthal of Rubies, and Brian Tester, is an electronic pop project specializing in synthy tropic hooks and airy vocal overlays. The statuesque Loewenthal floated over dubby sways as visual support live filmed her profile to create a distorted, white noise backdrop on the screen behind them. Their sound is heavily layered—at one point, Loewenthal even requested the audience shake [...]

Jessy Lanza to headline an evening of electronic R&B

Jessy Lanza, the ethereal electro R&B specter behind Pull My Hair Back  (out last year via Hyperdub) will be haunting Amnesia this Saturday as the headliner of the 15th Pro Fans Showcase. Pull My Hair Back, co-written and co-produced by Junior Boys' Jeremy Greenspan, eschews the bloat and overly-saccharine nuances of modern pop in pursuit of raw, breathy vamping. It speaks to Lanza's restrained but ever-present personality—-she knows how to work a room while still maintaining poise. The same can be said for opener Running in the Fog's Amanda Harper. The San Franciscan pulls from 90s R&B and jazz with a keen reverence for [...]

Chrome Canyon, Peanut Butter Wolf, Jonas Reinhardt, Shock, Chautauqua at Mezzanine this Friday, 2/22/13

Fire up the lasers, Chrome Canyon is coming to Mezzanine. New York synth artist Morgan Z – the man behind Chrome Canyon – will headline the electronic dance party on Friday, February 22 with support from local artists including Peanut Butter Wolf, Jonas Reinhardt, Shock, and Chautauqua. Last year, Morgan released his first full-length album as Chrome Canyon, Elemental Themes, via Stones Throw Records. The solo composer produces spacey synth epics reminiscent of '80s sci-fi soundtracks (think Gatekeeper, only less menacing), and Chrome Canyon's live sets are also known for incorporating stellar light shows. Listen to "Generations" off Elemental Themes, [...]

Interview & Giveaway: Voltaire Records' Randy Ellis on his label's upcoming releases, hosting Chrome Canyon and Peanut Butter Wolf at Mezzanine, 2/22/13

San Francisco's Voltaire Records is throwing one hell of a show on February 22 at Mezzanine, with none other than "chameleon-like" DJ Peanut Butter Wolf opening up for space funk maestro Chrome Canyon. Voltaire founder Randy Ellis, whose label has put out albums by Tussle, Loose Shus, and a bevy of other danceable, electro, krautrock, and analog synth-based bands, has been promoting shows here in SF for the past few years. Next Friday's gig at Mezzanine, which also features performances by Jonas Reinhardt, Shock, and Chautauqua, is Voltaire's first of 2013, and then Ellis heads down to L.A. to host [...]

The above reworking by Chautauqua (Loose Shus and Randy "Hotthobo" Ellis) applies a new age synth palette to "Heaven." Listen to the original and a dub remix by The Beat Broker below.
