Last week, they celebrated the many hits of their career at SFJAZZ Center, and our photographer Jon Bauer was at the show to capture the gallery from the night. Sons of Kemet (photo: Ria Burman) Sons of Kemet brought their atmospheric, powerful vibes to SFJAZZ Wednesday night getting the dance floor full and move-grooving, fast. Sax, tuba, and double drum kits held the stage as the London-based quartet, led by visionary saxophonist and bandleader Shabaka Hutchings, worked skill, dazzle, and awe into the instruments, joining sound creations to make magic music. Their third album release, the 2018 Your Queen Is A Reptile, off of Impulse! Records, is well worth of a whirl.

Photos: SFJAZZ Gala with Preservation Hall Jazz Band

Preservation Hall Jazz Band (photo: Ria Burman) SFJAZZ went to town for its annual gala, which raises money for its artistic and educational programs, serving thousands of students, while spreading the art form awareness of jazz. This year, among the beautiful pillars of red carnations, SFJAZZ honored Chucho Valdes with the SFJAZZ Lifetime Achievement Award. Preservation Hall Jazz Band finished out the gala and went blazing straight into the after show party.
