Beyond the Bay Area: A Sacramento Mixtape (Podcast #297)
Beyond the Bay Area: A Sacramento Mixtape (Podcast #297) It's not technically part of the Bay Area -- and by "technically," of course, we mean "at all" -- but we've been known to cheat a little bit and claim a good number of Sacramento bands as adopted locals over the years. Can you really blame us? Plenty of acts from the state's capital have made an big impact on independent music, including Death Grips, Chelsea Wolfe, and Trash Talk. All three of those groups eventually migrated to Los Angeles, with Death Grips leaking their latest album during a two-month stay [...]
Communion in the Redwoods: Three Days of Music in Big Sur
If you missed Treasure Island Music Festival, or you want something a little less urban and a little more acoustic, UK's Communion may have just the event for you. Communion teamed up with local promoters (((folkYEAH!))) to create Communion in The Redwoods at the Fernwood Resort in Big Sur. The festival will feature a slew of artists from Northern California, including The Devil Makes Three, Sea of Bees, Waters, and Grahame Lesh & Friends. The lineup is great, but you also have the opportunity to camp in a gorgeous setting - two and three-night camping packages, along with single day [...]

Phono del Sol Preview: Sea of Bees
This year's Phono del Sol lineup has all kinds of stellar local bands to get excited about, and Sea of Bees should definitely be one of them. Sacramento-based singer-songwriter Julie Ann Bee has a serious command over her guitar, and a warbling, depthful voice that captivates as it seduces. I was blown away by Sea of Bee's set at the Huichica Music Festival back in June -- Julie Ann Bee may be slight, but she has a stage presence that's not to be trifled with (and man, I really dig the white lightning bolt on her guitar strap). Her music [...]
Sea of Bees releases new video: "Gone"
Sacramento's Sea of Bees (songwriter Julie Ann Bee with other musician friends) has released a new video for "Gone". The track comes from May's Orangefarben, which has been praised by national press for its heartachy candor. The new video, directed by skate video director Mike Rafter, stars Bee, an orange guitar and a desolate-looking Amtrak station. Sea of Bees are playing shows here and there around California this summer, and are on the bill for the Bay Bridged's own Phono del Sol Festival, July 21st at Potrero del Sol Park in San Francisco.

Video: Sea of Bees – "Broke"
Cinematic and pleasantly saturated is Sea of Bees' newest video for "Broke," the first from the sophomore album Orangefarben. The video premiered on VICE this week, and was shot on family property outside of Jules' stomping grounds of Sacramento. This is the debut from director Kat Gardiner with the production company Food Chain Films. Sea of Bees played one last Bay Area show in late March before a two-month departure for the UK - believe it or not, one can spend that much time in one region! We can't expect anything more from Jules and her band until summer at [...]
Radiation City plays Rickshaw Stop with Sea of Bees Wednesday night
Hot off the release of Cool Nightmare, their second EP, Portland's Radiation City are bringing their atmoshperic, orchestral indie sounds back to our fair city. They play the Rickshaw Stop this Wednesday night with Sacramento's Sea of Bees and Brooklyn's The Loom. Rad City — as they're known to the cool kids (by which I mean, on Tumblr) — released this video for the Cool Nightmare track "Find It of Use." It's well worth watching. You see that piano up there on the cover of the EP? The one being played by that ghostly dude? Well if you looked at [...]
