Catch Le Vice, DUCKWRTH, & sayknowledge tonight at Elbo Room

Friday night, Le Vice headlines a night of live hip-hop at the Elbo Room, with support from RGLND & DUCKWRTH and sayknowledge - all artists that have released new material in the past 6 months. The lineup showcases a wide range of Bay Area hip-hop, which in my humble opinion features some of the most innovative and forward-thinking local artists in the Bay these days. Le Vice, whose music definitely includes the raps, but probably shouldn't be confined released their LP The Payoff late last year, and their video for “Jamir’s Bed Part I” premiered here on the Bay Bridged: [...]

Best of 2013: Russell Jelinek's highlights

John Murry (Photo by Amoreena Berg) I don't feel like ranking things, but here are some Bay Area highlights for 2013, limited to artists I wrote about: Favorite Albums: John Murry - Graceless Age: I tried to listen to Graceless Age in the background while doing some work on the computer. It didn't work. Murry punched me in the gut and took me away from whatever I was doing and totally consumed me. The standout "Little Colored Balloons", about Murry's heroin overdose in the Mission, may one of the most heartbreaking songs ever recorded, but there is so much more [...]

Mars Today – "The 'F' in Sexy" / "Casual Attire"

Producer, singer, and band leader Mars Today released a new single last week on Urb, "The 'F' in Sexy", which you can also stream or download below. We've previously mentioned Mars for his solid work producing the track and directing the video for "Art Goons" from sayknowledge and "The 'F' in Sexy" shows he isn't limited to work behind the scenes. This Friday at the Elbo Room, Mars Today will joined by a live band (complete with a horns section) to perform some of his solo work in addition to featuring several Bay Area artists Mars has produced and worked [...]

Video: sayknowledge – "Art Goons" (feat. Cashius Green)

San Francisco MC sayknowledge just dropped my favorite video of 2013, for the track "Art Goons", which was produced by the Bay Area's Mars Today and features a verse from Moreno Valley's Cashius Green. Mars, who also directed the video and produced sayknowledge's Vibe Called Quest album, has been working with the MC for the last few years, and it looks like they're on the right track. For "Art Goons", sayknowledge takes Mars' great beat and steals the show with his effortless flow and laid-back cool and confidence. Woostaar, who directed A-1's "Now You Do" video, added the visual effects [...]
