Bronze announce sophomore LP ‘World Arena,’ record release at the Eagle Tavern

San Francisco’s Bronze have announced their sophomore album World Arena on Not Not Fun Records. A smorgasbord of psychedelic, electronic influences the band plays their record release show at the Eagle Tavern on February 13. Joining them are local acts Sam Flax, Woman and Sacramento’s Screature. Recorded in San Francisco and mastered in Amsterdam, World Arena is the second LP for Bronze. Varying wildly in sound, the album features trance-like, electronic beats to post-punk bass heavy mediations. Listening to World Arena is kind of like taking a psychedelic journey through a multitude of influences. Take a moment to stream the album over [...]

Review & Photos: The Entrance Band & Sam Flax at The Chapel

Photos by: Ryan McDonald Before the headlining act took the stage, Sam Flax and his band stirred the crowd with a burning blend of synth-pop and guitar rock. With all members looking comfortable in ruby red lipstick, the band made their way through a setlist powered by both familiar and forgotten 1980s melodies. From the punchy riffs of "Everybody Wants," to the slow-danceable "Almost Young," the hazy songs from the group's 2012 album Age Waves, translated perfectly in a live setting, maintaining a consistent level of shimmery pop laced with moments of psychedelia. In the most complimentary sense possible, Sam Flax could [...]

Editors' Picks: What We've Been Listening to This Week (Steel Cranes, Sam Flax, Pond, Pelican, Yung Lean)

Steel Cranes (Photo: Miakoda Collins) Jason: After hearing "Boat Song", the lead single off Steel Cranes' upcoming debut LP Ouroboros, I was hooked by their heavy as all get-out sound. Now, the Oakland duo (consisting of singer and guitarist Tracy Shapiro and drummer Amanda Schukle) is back with a second offering off that upcoming album, due out September 24 – the equally heavy "Moving On", which has an almost poppy chorus without sacrificing the band's snarling edge across Shapiro's story of a relationship gone bad. The track is accompanied by a gritty video filmed along the shores of [...]

Saint Laurent, Hedi Slimane and Sam Flax: rock and roll continues to bleed into fashion

The realms of fashion and rock and roll often crossover for obvious reasons, the most apparent being that both worlds value beauty - not beauty in the classic sense of symmetry, but rather beauty in a sense of the unusual. Rock stars and songwriters with talent worthy of obsessing over often redefine what beautiful means: funny teeth, lazy eyes (I'm looking at you, Thom Yorke), and androgyny! So much androgyny. Bowie, Prince, Patti Smith. The Rolling Stones were labeled the ugliest band around by the press at a time when they were also the most potent, recognizable sex symbols in [...]

Sam Flax joins Foxygen (New York) at Brick and Mortar, 3/26/13

Pulling from 1960s psychedelia, 1970s rock and roll and new wave of the 1980s, Sam Flax is an artist from Berkeley who operates in the realm of lo-fi pop. Submerged in and inspired by playlists from past decades, he spent six years recording in his bedroom and finally emerged in 2012 with his debut album, Age Waves. The record offers both synthpop and guitar rock flavors, with a healthy amount of reverb weaving both sides of his sound together. After colorful performances at the Noise Pop Festival and Austin's South By Southwest, Sam Flax is bringing his burning tunes back [...]
