In the second installment of our artist spotlight series -- in which we invite great emerging Bay Area bands into the studio to perform stripped down versions of their songs and chat -- we're excited to feature SAFE. The performing and recording alias of CF Edley, SAFE has tempted listeners with a sporadic stream of offerings over the years -- an EP several years ago, a new single or video every so often -- all reliably terrific, navigating a unique mix of electronic sounds and Edley's emotive [...]
Best of 2013: Daniel Senter’s 2013 East Bay highlights
I joined The Bay Bridged staff as a Production Associate last spring, and it has been endlessly enjoyable to be pulled deeper into the sonic recesses of the Bay Area’s various scenes by TBB. As an Oakland resident, my Best of list just happened to trend toward the Bay’s warmer side, so I went with it. A few 2013 East Bay highlights, in no particular order: Glenn Jackson – Morning Swim EP The sounds are bright, breathy, and totally groovy. This three song solo debut from Oakland’s Glenn Jackson is house music to be enjoyed outside – whether on a [...]
Faux Ferocius, SAFE, Spencer Owen @ The Night Light tonight, 5/15/13
The Night Light in Oakland offers a great lineup tonight, with Nashville lo-fi pop band Faux Ferocious as the announced headliners, but with a "Surprise Special Guest" playing last. It will also sadly be the second to last Bay Area show for Chris Edley, aka SAFE, before he moves to Vermont. Spencer Owen rounds out the lineup, and the show will be MC'ed by Joel Robinow (keyboardist for Howlin' Rain). Below, watch SAFE's video for "Treason", a track Edley says he wrote and recorded in 15 minutes, along with Owen's Knock and Rock performance of "It Work". Owen, whom we've [...]

Safe releases 7", remastered EP, and accompanying videos
Berkeley "emotional singer" Safe released a 7-inch vinyl single along with a remastered version of his debut EP last week on Greedhead Music. Safe, aka CF Edley, was once the artistic director for MGMT, so you know he's going to drop some emotional videos for his emotional songs. The video for "Black Satin Living Room" was directed by Brandon Tauszik, who also directed Antwon's outstanding "Living Every Dream" video. A video for "Treason", which is a bonus track on his EP release, follows. Safe will be playing a free show at Treasure Island on Sunday night with Two Gallants and [...]
Safe to tour with Das Racist, release single and EP on Greedhead
East Bay/Brooklyn duo Safe is set to join Das Racist on tour tonight in Toronto. It is the first tour for Safe, which began as the solo project of CF Edley, but became a two-piece when Edley was joined by multi-instrumentalist Jesse Hadden shortly after his first EP. Currently, Safe is in Brooklyn mixing their full-length debut, which is slated for a February release on Greedhead Music, the label ran by Himanshu Suri (aka Heems) of Das Racist. The LP was recorded at Rec Center Studios in Oakland, and features Andrew Maguire from Magik*Magik Orchestra playing some vibraphone and from [...]
A song for Memorial Day weekend from Antwon and Safe
San Jose's Antwon and Oakland's Safe have teamed up to release "Love Shine Down," the first song off a summer mixtape from Sick Sad World. The track, recorded at Oakland's Rec Center Studios (which also doubles as a concert space), was produced by FaTees. The lyrics about girls and partying are what you would expect from a classic summer hip-hop song, but the production and spaced-out vocals from Safe give it a fresh twist. I highly recommend turning it up while you're drinking around the grill this weekend. Stream "Love Shine Down" below. Look for the rest of the mixtape [...]
Saturday: 'The City is Ours' party in Oakland
Casy & Brian by Casy & Brian Just got a heads-up about the rad-looking "The City is Ours" party going down in Oakland this Saturday night with a crazy long bill of local musicians, including acts-we've-written-about Twin Steps, Casy & Brian, and SAFE, as well as a bunch of artists we'll be covering more in the future, like San Jose rapper Antwon and Oakland production duo Friendzone. The full list of announced acts and more music can be found below. The location is currently unknown, but it looks like it will be announced by Hoodstock's Twitter account. ONeOFfS by SAFE [...]
New videos from Yalls, SAFE
http://vimeo.com/22215147 While we're on an East Bay music high today, please enjoy a few videos from Yalls and SAFE. Yalls aka Dan Casey cued up some scenes of his backyard in Berkeley and a BBQ in Oakland to the track "Run Deep." The rest of the How Much We Have Lost EP as well as Casey's January-released EP are posted on bandcamp. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWz_6diZseY Out of Oakland, SAFE began a series of live videos that the band says will be posted periodically. The first is for the track "HATESONG," performed live and acoustic. SAFE is in the process of recording a [...]
Mixtape: Only the East Bay (Podcast #247)
Mixtape: Only the East Bay (Podcast #247) This podcast episode is part mixtape and part mea culpa. Even though our name is The Bay Bridged, we periodically get people calling us out on our SF-centric coverage of Bay Area indie music. In recognition of all of the great music coming from the other side of the Bay, this mix features only East Bay artists--15 of them--spanning a wide variety of styles and sounds. The collection shows that, just like in SF, there's a diverse batch of talent in Oakland and beyond that's well worth checking out. Subscribe to The Bay [...]
