Q&A: Aquarius Records’ Andee Connors on RSD, reunions, and reissues

Within the confines of Aquarius Records is a plethora of music both old and new; Strange and wonderful; Eclectic and disorienting. It’s nearly overwhelming when browsing. One of the few remaining haunts of the San Francisco that once existed, Aquarius Records is one of the oldest independent record stores in the city. Displayed prominently on the AQ website reads: The store that's old enough to think it's funny that we're selling lots of tapes again. This sense of humor and honesty is the kind of conversation that aQ co-owner Andee Connors lends himself constantly––a kind of brutal truthfulness  sprinkled with jokes. Connors first [...]

Father/Daughter drops Sadie Dupuis track off RSD covers album

Sadie Dupuis, the spunky leader of Speedy Ortiz, went solo to cover Josie & the Pussycats' "Pretend to be Nice" for local label Father/Daughter's Record Store Day release, Faux Real. The stripped-down, smokier version captures the song's bitter flavor, and the impudent Dupuis is the perfect vessel for the track's message. More tracks from the record include songs adapted from The Muppets, Freaky Friday, The Goofy Movie and more. These will come out April 19 for the official Record Store Day, but move fast—only 500 copies were pressed. Fans of Speedy Ortiz will be able to catch them soon as well. They're playing [...]

Record Store Day 2013 is tomorrow (pick up vinyl from locals Ty Segall, Golden Void, Moon Duo and more)

Lovers of vinyl will go to bed tonight with visions of sugar-plums dancing in their heads, as Record Store Day – the high holiday for audiophiles around the world – returns tomorrow, and more than 25 Bay Area independent record shops are participating in the madness. This year's event (the seventh official RSD) features not only its usual array of special releases from high profile musicians, but a handful of local acts are jumping into the fray, dropping limited edition wax that will no doubt delight many scenesters from the Bay and beyond. Included on that list of local denizens [...]

Photos: Record Store Day 2012, Amoeba San Francisco

While all of San Francisco (in fact, even all of the rest of Haight Street, seen here), looked like this at 9 AM Saturday morning (4/21/12), the corner of Haight and Stanyan was already accomodating a line for Record Store Day 2012 which stretched to the back of the Mickey D lot and onto Waller. [nggallery id=169] Mind you, these pictures were taken a full 90-60 minutes before the team at Amoeba SF, showing their tightly knit record store day management skills, began easing the throng into the building. I admit that I had never seen the opening moments of [...]

How was your Record Store Day? From TBB Staff, with love

We at The Bay Bridged did a little Record Store Day celebrating over the weekend, whether that means stopping in to catch a performance or seeking out the one-day-only sales (we're just as poor as all of you, folks!). Compiled below are our observations from events throughout the Bay Area. Armadillo Music in Davis, 5pm: This independent record store has been providing Davis with local support and decent prices for decades, and it is no wonder that they were busy on Saturday -- yet partly due to the yearly Picnic Day event thrown on UC Davis' campus. Every Saturday they [...]
