Best of 2013: Russell Jelinek's highlights

John Murry (Photo by Amoreena Berg) I don't feel like ranking things, but here are some Bay Area highlights for 2013, limited to artists I wrote about: Favorite Albums: John Murry - Graceless Age: I tried to listen to Graceless Age in the background while doing some work on the computer. It didn't work. Murry punched me in the gut and took me away from whatever I was doing and totally consumed me. The standout "Little Colored Balloons", about Murry's heroin overdose in the Mission, may one of the most heartbreaking songs ever recorded, but there is so much more [...]

Mixtape: Bay Area Rock and Roll, Garage Punk, Lo-Fi, and Power Pop (Podcast #312)

http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/SF_Garage_Mix_2013.mp3 Download: Mixtape: Bay Area Rock and Roll, Garage Punk, Lo-Fi, and Power Pop (Podcast #312) Over the past few years, the San Francisco Bay Area has dominated the world of garage rock, with folks like Thee Oh Sees, Shannon and the Clams and Ty Segall recognized as the leaders of a fertile local rock and roll scene. In 2013, all three of those acts remain great: the first two put out a couple of the year's best albums, and the now LA-based Ty's newest comes highly anticipated from Drag City next week. An honest accounting of Bay Area rock [...]

Primitive Hearts and Adam Widener open for The Steve Adamyk Band and Needles//Pins

San Francisco solo garage rock machine Adam Widener will join fellow San Franciscans Primitive Hearts opening for Canadian punks The Steve Adamyk Band and Needles//Pins Tuesday night at Thee Parkside. Widener, who plays bass at his live shows, has performed with Warm Soda as his backing band for solo shows in the past. For Tuesday's show, the well-connected Widener enlisted the help of drummer Phil Lantz and singer/guitarist Patrick Clos from Cocktails, and will use DSTVV's Joel Cusumano as his lead guitarist. You can stream The Steve Adamyk Band's most recent LP on Exclaim and listen/watch to the rest of [...]

Primitive Hearts to release debut LP, playing Brick & Mortar tonight 4/17/13

Oakland trio Primitive Hearts are now streaming their debut LP, High & Tight, on their Bandcamp page. Most of Primitive Hearts' tracks remind me of '50s and '60s bubble-gum pop songs at their core, but they turn up the distortion and speed things up to give it a Bay Area garage feel. You can preorder vinyl for High & Tight from Philly's FDH Records, or stream below. Primitive Hearts just wrapped up a tour of Southern California with Cocktails, and will play tonight at Brick & Mortar with Night Beats and Cool Ghouls. High & Tight by Primitive Hearts Night [...]

Live This Month: January 2012 (Podcast #268) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. If the beginning of January feels a little slim on the live music front, things should ramp back up into the usual overwhelming number of interesting shows by the month's end. Several young local bands recently came onto our radar -- including Churches, Poor Sons, and Primitive Hearts -- and they're all partaking in locals-heavy bills in the next few weeks. On the coming-into-town front, it seems that, [...]
