Video Premiere: Pregnant’s a “Wimp”

Sacramento's Pregnant makes electronic pop music that is definitely weird, but also deeply moving and thoughtful. June 30, the Daniel Trudeau fronted outfit is adding to their extensive discography with the release of their full length entitled Duct Tape. Duct Tape will be available via three labels, Madeline Kenney's Copper Mouth, Golden Brown out of Portland, and South Carolina's Plastic Response. Since Pregnant is semi-local, on a local label, and frequently perform in the Bay, we're lucky enough to debut their new video for Duct Tape's "Wimp", which was also created by Daniel Trudeau. "The song 'Wimp' is about how [...]

Beyond the Bay Area: A Sacramento Mixtape (Podcast #297)

Beyond the Bay Area: A Sacramento Mixtape (Podcast #297) It's not technically part of the Bay Area -- and by "technically," of course, we mean "at all" -- but we've been known to cheat a little bit and claim a good number of Sacramento bands as adopted locals over the years. Can you really blame us? Plenty of acts from the state's capital have made an big impact on independent music, including Death Grips, Chelsea Wolfe, and Trash Talk. All three of those groups eventually migrated to Los Angeles, with Death Grips leaking their latest album during a two-month stay [...]

HUME playing with Pregnant at The Depot (SFSU) 9/19/12

Baltimore-based experimental rock outfit HUME is coming to San Francisco on September 19th to play a show with Sacramento's Pregnant at The Depot, located in the Cesar Chavez Student Center on the SFSU campus. Stream HUME's new single "Phasing" below, via the band's Bandcamp page. PHASING by HUME HUME is the brainchild of classically trained musician Britton Powell, who has toured extensively with the constantly shifting project, exploring new sounds and environments. In 2011, the band arrived at its current lineup, which consists of dual drummers, vocals, electric bass, and electric guitar, "often decontextualized and redefined through otherworldly stereo processing." [...]

Pregnant – ‘Life Hard: I Try’ out September 6 on Mush Records, stream now

Not long ago did Northern Californian Daniel Trudeau aka Pregnant release Regional Music (we wrote it up in April). His new collection Life Hard: I Try comes out September 6 on Mush Records, but is already streaming online. Maybe it's not common to associate glitchy, heavy sampling with a sensitive pop song. Regardless, that's exactly Pregnant. Record after record, Trudeau's songwriting gains amorphous, unreserved quality. This is fitting, seeing as the fourth LP Trudeau himself claims is "an ode to all the outsiders." The music of Pregnant is something truly understood when experienced live, which happened for some in San [...]

Sunday: Yours Truly/Terroreyez host Magic Bullets, Pregnant, J. Irvin Dally RSVP-only show

Terror Eyes and Yours Truly have collaborated again to curate a screening party of their respective work, along with a live show featuring Magic Bullets, Pregnant (Sacramento) and J. Irvin Dally. The party takes place this Sunday at a location which will be revealed only to those who RSVP to the Facebook invitation (8pm, $5). http://vimeo.com/19177271 This bill is eclectic but very intriguing -- Magic Bullets will be experimenting with new songs (via Twitter), while the two other acts come from different worlds than the indie pop headliners. J. Irvin Dally is a former Northern California dweller now living in [...]

Pregnant and Appetite: new sounds from Sacramento

If it seems like things have been quiet on the Sacramento front, we should clear that up. Here's the latest commotion coming from up north. Pregnant - "Wiff of Father" Pregnant comes from the Sierra foothills, a solo musician (real name: Daniel Trudeau) who gets it all done himself via looping, pedals, playing guitar and/or saxophone, anything to maintain a one-man show. The result is nothing hard on the ears -- these elements blend into a bright, electronic psych-folk medley, with creeping dark undertones. Trudeau's album Regional Music is out now on Life's Blood, and he has also released on [...]
