Van Pierszalowski of Port O’Brien returns with WATERS

WATERS - "O Holy Break Of Day" Following the dissolution of beloved SF rock band Port O'Brien last year, Van Pierszalowski moved to Oslo, Norway, before spending time visiting Alaska, California, and New York. All of that traveling helped inspire him to write a batch of songs for a new project Pierszalowski is calling WATERS. WATERS - "For the One" As you can hear in the songs above, there's a more decidedly rock and roll vibe to WATERS than Port O'Brien had. WATERS performs at The Independent with Mister Heavenly on August 22nd, and the band's debut album, Out in [...]

Thirty-Two Great San Francisco Bay Area Albums from 2009 (Part 1)

The Bay Area may not have a single unified scene, but its diverse musical communities produced a ton of acclaimed records in 2009. The following list collects thirty-two of the highlights that made this another banner year for Bay Area indie music. It's a collection that showcases the depth of Bay Area indie in 2009, and one suspects that few other regions have offered this volume of quality releases this year. A couple of qualifiers: This isn't a comprehensive list of excellent local records from 2009 or intended as any sort of official Bay Bridged "Best of" set. Plenty of [...]

Grand Lake covers Silver Jews and includes Port O’Brien on new EP

It's hard to fight the urge of covering the Silver Jews, and many do falter -- like Little Wings at Outlerlands Cafe, the night that almost didn't end due to Field's surprising thrill in covering Silver Jews and Grandaddy. Grand Lake has also fallen victim to the temptation. They've included a cover of "Slow Education" on their four-track EP out next Tuesday (preorders available on MySpace) and paired it with a fantasticly abstract video (above). Half of the EP is made up of covers, which also reveals a retired Port O'Brien track, "Pigeonhold." Caleb's rationale is rooted in his "stint" [...]

A Welcome Homecoming: Port O’Brien, Geographer, Golden Gram, 11/5 @ Bottom of the Hill

Photos by: Charlie Homo It's been a long seven weeks for Port O'Brien. They've been on tour all over the country, had their van broken into, and had some equipment stolen. Well, they are finally back in town and you could tell how glad they are to be home. "Golden Gram" LeBron got up first and gave us a tasty treat as the crowd began filling the venue. As is the case with most early crowds, people seemed a bit more preoccupied with catching up and getting a beer than listening to the first act. Gram played mostly songs off [...]
