POP ETC announce LP ‘Souvenir,’ watch karaoke-themed video for single “Bad Break” now

Remember the Morning Benders? In case you need a refresher, the Berkeley boys behind everyone's favorite album of 2010 (Big Echo, released via Rough Trade) are now POP ETC. To help fans with the change, they released a mixtape back in 2012. Since then, we haven't heard much from them, until now -- the band, led by Chris Chu, just announced their first album as POP ETC. It's called Souvenir and it'll be out on January 29, 2016. The album took them years to record, but the final product is one they're proud of. Speaking about the record, Chu said in a [...]

Best of the Rest – February 2015 (Six Organs of Admittance, bAd bAd, Panic Is Perfect, & more)

Ben Chasny of Six Organs of Admittance (Photo Credit: Drag City) Every month, our editors hear lots of great new music, at shows around the Bay, exploring the far reaches of the Interwebs, and sifting through the veritable deluge of emails from artists and publicists around the globe hawking the latest songs and videos. That reaching for familiar aesthetics in their music, though, is a strategy they often employ — not just a novel pursuit for their newest release. "Pop music always elevates and celebrates the hook—the catchy bit that sticks [...]

Video: POP ETC – "Keep It For Your Own" (Yours Truly session); stream the band's new LP

I first fell in love with POP ETC, then known as The Morning Benders, when I saw the Yours Truly session for their single "Excuses," off their 2010 album Big Echo. In addition to being one of the more stunning live recordings I've ever seen, or heard, the combination of incredible video production with seeming musical spontaneity still makes it a pretty joyful video to watch. A lot has changed since then. The Morning Benders moved to Brooklyn and changed their name to POP ETC, inspiring a litany of reactions ranging from uninterested to disdainful, and evolved their sound away [...]
