Strong contingency of Bay Area bands performing at Pickathon Music Fest

Pickathon, one of the faster-growing West Coast music festivals, announced new additions this week to its lineup, which already featured a number of current and former Bay Area artists. Included among the fresh acts for the event, which takes place on a farm outside of Portland, are San Francisco’s Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, who will join the likes of Oakland’s Ezra Furman and Moon Duo of San Francisco in repping the Bay Area at the four-day event. That’s not to mention heavy-hitters like Ty Segall (backed by his ghoulish Muggers) and Thee Oh Sees, both of whom [...]

Review/Photos: Pickathon rocks Oregon in its 16th year

Mikal Cronin (Photo: Joseph Schell) Article by Sara Weihmann / Photos by Joseph Schell In its beginnings, Pickathon focused on bluegrass, old time, and folk music. Nowadays (in its 16th year) while the festival clearly maintains its devotion to these roots, artists included in the festival are all-over-the-place brilliant and representative of indie, Americana, soul, hip hop and, yes, even punk and rock and roll genres. With performers like Mikal Cronin, Diarrhea Planet and The War on Drugs playing this year, Pickathon literally rocked. This year, artists like Nickel Creek, Blind Pilot, Jonathan Richman, Shakey Graves, Valerie June, and other [...]

Head up to Oregon in August for the one and only Pickathon

It's difficult to imagine life after Phono del Sol – we get it. Yes, the possibility that any summer music festival could top what Phono has to offer this Saturday seems impossible. But should you be ready to venture back out onto the festival circuit by, say, August, there's an amazing weekend awaiting you in an enchanted forest outside of Portland – Pickathon. Taking place August 1–3, 2014 at Pendarvis Farm in Happy Valley, Oregon (15 minutes from downtown Portland), Pickathon features six beautiful stages nestled in the woods and musical acts covering a vast array of genres, including Nickel [...]

Review & Photos: More highlights from Pickathon 2013!

This was my second Pickathon. Watching Bonnie Prince Billy a few years ago on the Woods stage, full of Dickel, was enough to draw me back. Hell, I'd go to see just about anyone on that fucking stage, and when I heard Howe Gelb would play this year, I forked out the big bucks and dug up the tent. Howe brought a full band and even played my request for "Wonder." It just so happened that Victoria Williams was in the crowd, and she was invited up to sing along. Paradise. Of course, this year would be different. Last time, [...]

Ty Segall and friends @ Pickathon 2013 (Photo: Joseph Schell) Article by Anna Schell / Photos by Joseph Schell Bay Area artists Ty Segall, White Fence, Jessica Pratt, The Devil Makes Three, and Diane Ferlatte played at Oregon’s annual Pickathon music festival this past weekend. After 15 years, Pickathon’s organizers have the winning festival formula dialed in: eclectic line-up + attendance capped at 7,000 + kid-friendly + environmentally-friendly = everybody’s happy. Featured musical artists tended to agree, frequently declaring the three-day festival a highlight of their touring circuit. “Everyone in the world is trying to do what you’re doing here,” [...]

Pickathon celebrates its 15th anniversary with Ty Segall and Jessica Pratt, August 2013

Photo by John Keel If the idea of festival juggernauts like Coachella, Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo stresses you out despite your appetite for the elongated thrill of a three-day party, Pickathon is a perfect alternative. Located at the Pendarvis Farm in Oregon, fifteen minutes outside of Portland, the festival is held not at a small venue, but at one of the most intimate settings there are for a large musical gathering. While offering the same escape as more mainstream festivals - on-site camping, seven stages designed to transport audiences into different realities (seriously, pictured above are The Barr Brothers performing on the Woods Stage [...]

Portland festival Pickathon welcomes Bay Area bands: Thee Oh Sees, Sonny & the Sunsets, more

Having been fortunate enough to attend Pickathon back in 2009, I can safely say that Portland's indie roots festival is a welcome antithesis to your more typical modern indie festival. Where some festivals might be overcrowded and hot and may only offer terrible corporate beer at a high price, Pickathon is intimate, friendly, and offers cheaply priced microbrews and delicious food from local vendors. All the while, Pickathon has managed to grow in terms of lineup - this year's headliners include Neko Case, for instance. Additionally, 2012's lineup will feature a variety of artists with Bay Area roots: Thee Oh [...]
