The She’s to have fundraiser for La Casa de las Madres at Phono del Sol

The She's recently informed everyone that they will be having a fundraiser at their merch table during Phono del Sol, all donations go to La Casa de las Madres. La Casa is a nonprofit organization that responds to calls for help from domestic violence victims, of all ages, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They are an amazing local nonprofit that give abuse survivors the tools to transform their lives, making a much-needed effort to seek to prevent future violence by educating the community and by redefining public perceptions about domestic violence. If you'd like to see a list [...]

Phono del Sol: The She’s will always make you feel better

Just because The She's are not The He's doesn't mean they are a girl band. Yes, they may have started the band when they were still young girls, but these women are more talented and motivated than most "boy" bands that'll only stay together for a couple years (though when it's all boys, we usually just call them bands). When I speak about The She's to others, we talk about how proud we are, how meeting them made us feel included, how meeting them inspired us to be better. Most bands change members constantly, most bands only revolve around one [...]

Phono del Sol players Born Ruffians talk band milestones, beer brewing, cult followings

Born Ruffians (photo: Laura Lynn Petrick) Born Ruffians are a band of enduring, humble sensibilities. Hailing from Ontario, the band has seen lineup changes (original drummer Steve Hamelin left the band to go back to school), label jumps (Warp to Yep Roc), and infamous reviews (Pitchfork gave their second record Say It a 3.8 rating), but through their four records and countless EPs, they've amassed a fervent family of fans, especially in the Bay Area, who gather lovingly around their brand of spastic, wry, cathartic indie rock. Ahead of their day in sun playing our Phono del Sol festival this [...]

Phono del Sol: Where did our missing flamingos go?

Illustration by Cassidy Miller Since Phono del Sol Music Festival began in 2011, our mascot has been a big pink flamingo (whom we've since named Pedro del Sol). Over the years, we've decorated the park in tribute to Pedro, festooning the grounds in tropical-themed decor and creating our now-famous flamingo fountain, where dozens of plastic lawn flamingos burst out of the fountain at the entrance to the festival. We love it. You love it. But every year, we are left with a suspicious flamingo deficit. Since we wouldn't dream of accusing our patrons of stealing our supplies (plastic flamingos are [...]

Phono del Sol headliners Chairlift will definitely make you move

Chairlift (photo: Tim Barber) All the people who describe the music of Chairlift as operatic — which is not a bad descriptor for the two-piece Brooklyn synth-pop group — probably didn’t realize just how close they were to hitting the truth. That’s because Caroline Polachek, whose elastic vocal range gives the band a unique emotional bandwidth, prepped for Chairlift’s latest tour by undergoing an unusual training regimen: She took opera lessons. “I realized I was at risk of permanently damaging my vocals by singing these songs every night,” said Polachek, who makes up Chairlift alongside fellow multi-instrumentalist Patrick Wimberly. “I [...]

Chairlift sit down for Pitchfork’s ‘Over/Under’

Believe it or not, we do listen to non-local artists from time to time. Chairlift is one of our "other" faves — so much so that they're headlining Phono del Sol this year. Yesterday, Pitchfork debuted a new installment of their "Over/Under" series, where musicians and entertainers rapid-fire answer whether a given item deserves more or less respect than it already has. Chairlift's entry, covering The Little Mermaid, James Taylor, and, uh, screaming, is hilarious and charming. I'm kind of surprised they had so much trouble remembering the name of "Part of Your World," but maybe most kids didn't spend [...]

Adam Vida (FKA A-1) joins the lineup for Phono del Sol 2016!

Important Phono del Sol 2016 update: We're very excited to announce that the ninth and final artist performing at the 2016 Phono del Sol Music & Food Festival is the Mission District's own Adam Vida! Formerly known as A-1, Adam is one of our favorite rappers, having established himself as one of hip-hop's premier lyricists over a series of mixtapes. With a new EP dropping soon, we're thrilled that Adam Vida will perform at Phono del Sol 2016! As a reminder, he'll be joining Chairlift, Alvvays, Born Ruffians, Mr. Little Jeans, The Seshen, The She's, Hot Flash Heat Wave, [...]
