This episode first appeared on KQED.org. http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/Festivals_2017_Mixtape.mp3 Download: Mixtape: Northern California's Best Music Festivals (Podcast #407) Music festival season unofficially kicked off over Memorial Day weekend, with the latest installment of the BottleRock Napa Valley festival attracting 120,000 attendees for three days of food, wine, and over 80 bands ranging from the Foo Fighters to the Napa Youth Symphony. The number and types of music fests has grown considerably in recent years -- among this year's new offerings are not one, but two new music and comedy weekends coming to the Bay in June -- surely to the dismay of [...]

Pizza Wars: Personal and the Pizzas announce show same night as Pizza Underground

Macaulay Culkin’s Pizza Underground is amusing at best and gimmicky at worst. Unsurprisingly, the pizza-themed tribute band that exploded on the internet plays a sold out show at Neck of the Woods on March 5. Tickets went fast, and why wouldn't they? It's a chance to see everyone's favorite kid star sing morosely about pizza. But here’s the thing, San Francisco doesn’t need Ri¢hie Ri¢h to come to town to perform pizza-themed-Velvet-Underground songs, because the Bay Area already has a band for that. And honestly, they're a little pissed with Macaulay's antics. Personal & the Pizzas are a rambunctious bunch: [...]

Volar Records – Under the Covers Vol. 2 cassette out now

San Diego punk label Volar Records just released a 200-cassette run of a tribute to 70s power-pop hitmakers Paul Collins, Peter Case and Jack Lee. The trio started out in San Francisco as The Nerves before branching into other projects (The Beat, The Plimsouls); they were also behind "When You Find Out" and that one song "Hanging on the Telephone." Several contributors to Under the Covers Vol. 2 come out of the San Francisco garage-pop scene: Grass Widow, Hunx & His Punx, The Moonhearts, The Mantles, Personal and the Pizzas, and White Fence. Personal and the Pizzas serve up “Raw Pie”

Personal and the Pizzas - "Brass Knuckles" For me, comedy and music are two great tastes that should generally stay the hell away from each other. But like all ironclad rules, there are those exceptions that either prove the rule or expose its hollowness. Like my love for Personal and the Pizzas, whose recent Burger Records tape Raw Pie, collecting the band's various singles, may end up one of the year's best releases. On the band's MySpace page, these allegedly-from-Jersey guys offer a shorthand take on their formula for pop hits: "ONE RAMONES RIFF + ONE STOOGES RIFF [...]
